shift points...
shift points...
Hey guys,
I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and he brought up something about shift points. Since I haven't been driving a stick for very long (I recently got a '79 n/a 5-speed), I was wondering when exactly these "shift points" occur? Is there like a best rpm to shift at for every gear or something? Oh yeah, my car's tranny was replaced with an '83 ZX's, if that matters. Thanks for any info.

It depends if you want to drive it smoothly or get maximum speed
if you want smooth shift anywhere near the middle of the powerband
if you want fast shift right where the horsepower flattens out on top end (you will feel the flat spot more revs will NOT equal more power)

5200-5400 is a good shift point. The factory camshaft has a short duration for good torque but tops out on power at 5200 rpm. Even a good intake and exhaust will not change your power above 5200 rpm so your shift point will remain the same. A longer duration cam will change all of that, but add to that more fuel or you're still limited on power in the 5400+ rpm range.
A performance cam will usually tell you what rpm range it works good at.
