Odd L28 engine

Ok I've decided to use that odd engine I have but maybe you guys can help me figure this out.

First this off is its a N42 Block, P79 head. Now it gets worse. It has mismatched pistons. From Front to back. F54 N/A Flattop, Turbo Dished, N42 N/A Dished, F54 N/A Flattop, N42 N/A Dished, Turbo Dished.

On top of that the balance weights on the crank seem to have been machined down a bit. their shiny like brand new metal. nothing but the cylinder walls inside the block is that shiny.

Any ideas as to WTF is going on with this L28? Im going to use in my Z till I can get the money to get my real L28 rebuilt. (DDing a old truck SUCKS I need my Z)

Pics soon once my Camera decides to charge.

Yes I have but the timing was way off so I never really got it to run right

skib 09-23-2009 11:13 PM

slap her together and run it, just make sure the timing chain is on %100 correctly and it should be fine for keeping the Z up till the other motors done

BlueKitsune 09-23-2009 11:16 PM

Sense it ran I kinda figured that much. And the P79 head it has is 100% new which is really amazing.

Anyways still no idea on whats the deal with this engine???

hoov100 09-23-2009 11:28 PM

thats some nigged shit right their! :D but **** it, run it!!!!

skib 09-23-2009 11:30 PM

lol that was someone assembling it from what was laying around.

**** it, itl work tho

BlueKitsune 09-23-2009 11:31 PM

Ya then blow up 100 miles later? lol

What i want to know is why they machined the crank? To make it lighter? I hope this thing is still in balance.

long as its balanced you dont have to worry about anything, thats why i asked if you had run it before

Well it ran like crap. but I knew it was way out of time. The lifters might not even be adjusted right yet. Oh well Now to get a headgasket and see if I can sneak by, by reusing the old headbolts lol

thats fine tho, just make sure your timing chain is on correctly and your dizzy isnt 180out and a valve adjustment takes like 10min. give the head bolts a little extra torque to make up for stretch and call it good :023:

Well When I get it done I'll tell you guys how it runs. Im voting like crap lol

kittyz 09-24-2009 01:39 PM

good luck bro!

SHADY280 09-24-2009 07:26 PM

id run that. diff. pistons only matters if your building turbo, or high comp engines. for a daily, who cares. id make sure the t-chain is not stretched and put it back together. those are factory machining marks. thats as stock crank from what i see.

BlueKitsune 09-26-2009 08:06 PM

Ok Ordered the new felpro headgasket set. and the engine head would head off to the machinist but it looks too new so Im just going to spray it down with solvent and check to see if the head is still flush. I might get fancy and paint the block dunno lol I dont think that engine will last very long IMO

BlueKitsune 09-26-2009 10:22 PM

Those old headbolts are kinda scaring me a bit...

hoov100 09-26-2009 11:09 PM

**** it! just slap a head gasket on it, run some head bolts you have laying around and use a head that isnt completey ****ed! :D just slap the turd together and run it until the pistons are one with the block, or you have a few rods out the side of the block!!!!!

SHADY280 09-27-2009 10:21 AM

datsun headbolts dont stretch much, ive re-used them a few times with high compression even. they are old school steel, not this new softer stuff

BlueKitsune 09-27-2009 11:02 AM

Well just waiting on parts. Im going to clean the block up and get it ready for some paint while I wait

BlueKitsune 09-27-2009 11:13 AM

Do the pins come out of the fly wheel so you can turn the entire thing? Or do you just machine down where the clutch disc actually touches?

hoov100 09-27-2009 08:55 PM

just take them the clutch and flywheel and have the flywheel turned and then balanced.

I would but all they do is turn the fly wheel, no balancing or anything. I guess thats what you get for $15 huh?

BlueKitsune 09-28-2009 08:13 PM

Blocks clean, head is getting clean and so is the timing chain cover.

I got bored so I cut off the EGR part of my intake manifold, and my luck the angle grinder kicked back and made the cut uneven, oh well time for the dremal!

BlueKitsune 10-01-2009 01:06 PM

GOT MY GASKETS IN! Tho I just noticed, that the head has cooling holes in it that the headgasket and the block doesnt have, but I can see on the block where they should be, Think I should drill them out or will it be ok?
And I got the headgasket for a 83 N/A
