Question Need exhaust measurements

Hey everybody, I am having an exhaust leak again. And I know that I need the metal gaskets that go on the front and rear of the cat. What I have decided to do. Is get a piece of pipe, that is a tad smaller than the header pipe, and the rear part of the exhaust. As far as I know, I believe the width of the pipe is stock.(and that is the measurement I need)

Anyway I need your feedback on the measurements. I am going to get a piece of pipe a little longer. So I can cut it to the length I need, and then it is going inside the header pipe, and the rear exhaust pipe. Thus eliminating the cat, until emissions time again. Then by that time, I should have the metal gaskets I need. I am probably going to have to go to the dealer, and I don't want to wait. I want it fixed this coming weekend. I need all the help, I can get, I am tired of smelling like exhaust, everytime I drive my Z. And thanks everybody.

You could just weld the cat in. Sure it makes future changes a pain in the ***, but you'll never have to worry about leaks

I really don't want to do that though. Because this exhaust is not permanent. I plan on putting a turbo exhaust, perferabely the dual twin tip later on. When I am ready to do my turbo swap. From what the auction says, is that the pipe is 2.50". So that would mean 2 1/2"? That is the measurement I needed, so I can just stick a pipe inside it. And then come emission time, swap the cat on.

I'm not sure the diameter of the stock non-turbo exhaust, but the turbo is 2.5". If you've still got the stock exhaust then you'll need something smaller. I think the non turbo is closer to 2", but I cant be cetain. I'm sure someone knows the diameter.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am going to the Nissan dealer today, and get a couple of gaskets. I have decided to just get the gaskets, and put them back on. It sounds easier to me, than fooling around with sticking a pipe in inside, and then getting it stuck. Anyway I will probably do the operation tomorrow. Wish me luck, and thanks again.

Okay well, I had to order the gaskets today. They will be in by Wednesday next week or so. They cost me $10 a piece plus tax. Not bad I guess, so I have to drive my Z another week breathing that wonderful exhaust. It only gets real bad, when the exhaust warms up. If it is cold, I can hardly smell it at all. Anyway I am going to tackle something else on my Z this weekend. Maybe my stereo and console. And fix some other small things. Possibly even my power antenna, take it out of my '81. And install it in my '82, that would be sweet.
