intake manifold removal

when removing the manifoldis their more then 4 bolts to remove or is their 1 under the manifold

NismoPick Aug 31, 2008 10:56 AM

Page 67 of the 280zx Haynes manual shows all the studs & bolts...

See all the small holes between the intake & exhaust ports... those are all studs (there's 7-9 that hold BOTH the intake & exhaust on).

Jasondiz Aug 31, 2008 11:31 AM

I took the head off my 1983 recently and that had me stuck for a while. I didn't have a manual and i was determined to get it off and i finally got it off about thirty minutes once i figured out there were more than four bolts

scorpionp54 Aug 31, 2008 11:35 AM

where r the other bolts then i cant see them

NismoPick Aug 31, 2008 11:46 AM

Lemme repeat again:

The intake & exhaust manifolds share the studs in between the intake & exhaust ports. They both fit together at an angle & there are nuts you must get to from the underside. Remember yesterday when I said it's a BIOTCH to get to the front ones due to the a/c compressor?

You get to them from underneath the exhaust mani.

ok thank you

scorpionp54 Sep 5, 2008 09:35 PM

ok when i took apart my exhaust manifold i noticed that there was no bolts on the 2 ends of the headers, now that i put it all back together my exhaust leak is worst now then what it was. i was wondering if there was supposed to be those two bolts at the ends.

NismoPick Sep 5, 2008 10:51 PM

Yep. Anywhere on the manifold / head that looks like studs are supposed to be there... they really are supposed to be there. Without them, the gasket burns through pretty quick.

duowing Sep 6, 2008 01:39 AM

I don't remember the A/C compressor really being in the way when I did my intake/exhaust gasket. If anything I remember the big pain in the ass being the stupid thin heat shield that was on the exhaust manifold.

i had a sticky made for this job, READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know I was going to post the link to shady's sticky. I must have gotten distracted.

scorpionp54 Sep 6, 2008 09:21 AM

i see and first off my headers are on with bolts and not studs and i am missing the two outside bolts, im not shure if anyone else had worked on the exhaust but i'll look it up thanks guys

duowing Sep 6, 2008 03:51 PM

The exhaust manifold is held on by bolts, except for the two ends which were studs. Since they're missing they most likely have broken off. Is there anything in the hole or is it just an actual hole, as in someone removed them, they worked their way, who knows

SHADY280 Sep 7, 2008 12:56 AM

mine had studs becasue i purchased a stud kit to make life easier for myself holds the gasket in place really nice.

NismoPick Sep 7, 2008 07:46 PM

+1... Studs rock! (until you break one off).

question. where do you get vacuum from to change heater controls etc on n/a car with those manifolds on the palnet site that have no vacuum ports

michanic220 Sep 15, 2008 11:14 AM

i have a bad header leak on my Z car, the bolt closes to the firewall on the exhaust is gone. and it just dumps exhaust out at startup. LOL.

duowing Sep 15, 2008 11:53 AM

I bought the pallnet stud kit as well, but stock it has only two studs for the left and right most parts on the exhaust manifold, bolts for everything else.

You're talking about the non-egr N42 intake right? The stock N42 has several vacuum ports. Some people aluminum weld them shut & shave them down, but they usually keep one or two for the vac source... like this one (one for the brake assist, one for other vac needs):
