How to manually build oil pressure

Greetings all. I have a recently rebuilt motor that I'm having trouble building oil pressure. My understanding is that it is possible to "manually" prime the system via a drill down the distributor hole, but I'm not clear on the details of how you do this. Would this not still turn the crankshaft? In other words, how is it different than just cranking the motor with fuel and spark disconnected? Or alternately, is there a way of JUST pumping the oil system without moving any other mechanical bits that need lubrication. Thanks in advance.
