1981 1/2 actually. It has the air ducts of later models and the bumpers from earlier models.

Ya, 1981 is the first year. Looks like Austrailia had them only in 1983? wow, that was our last year for the 280zx. Maybe they have a 1984-85 280zx???
The air ducts are turbo ducts that were used on the next couple years on the non-turbo. Less production costs and they were more popular in the time. I think they look much better than the smaller vents.

About the car for sale: They guy may be trying to lie, or it may be a factory 280zx turbo engine that was transfered to a 1979 body/frame. That would be ok for reliability, but not true that it was an original factory turbo that year.

Uh, yes the 280ZX came out in 1979 but not the turbo. Nissan developed the turbo and released the 280zx turbo in 1981 in North America. I don't think any other country got it earlier. If so, probably just Japan as usual.

The 1979 280ZXR is not a turbo.... not that it is what we're talking about. I think I saw this pink '79 turbo on eBay. Looks like an engine transplant. As long as its a clean swap, then go for it if you want it. Don't expect the VIN and engine numbers to match!

I happen to have the 1979 Playboy 25th Anniversary issue. In it you will find a fold out ad for a 280ZX. Now weather or not it was advertising the next model year, I don't know. But it was the first year that Datsun offered cruise control with a 5-speed.
