Headers

I want to put a header on my 81 280zx NA. I am putting the hybrid turbo AFM and big throttle body on it and a Fuel Pressure regulator is forthcoming. Which brand header should I go with, and what should I do to the ignition to keep up with all the extra air/fuel? I am building up to a cam swap, but I want to get all my ducks in a row first. Also, can someone reccomend a good clutch kit? My 5speed is also ugly noisy, but holds in all the gears. Has anyone had any luck with rebuilding them and where do I get parts?

On your 5-speed, have you tried changing the fluid?
Keep the stock ignition for your setup. it will do fine.

CenterForce Dual Friction for the clutch. Its the best street clutch I've ever driven on.

Vicotoria British has the parts to rebuild the trannys, even the synchros and what not. But definitely check your fluid first like Bleach said. And the OEM clutch can handle quite a bit of power. If anything you may need to upgrade the disc but the cover offers plenty of pressure. The centerforce one is basically an OEM unit with weights added to the fingers. So you can use the centerforce disc with the OEM cover. Just make sure you replace everything at the same time, not just the disc. Headers is a touchy subject and I'm not going to recommend one over the other but remember that you get what you pay for. Keep asking around and you'll find someone who's had a good set. Don't worry about design too much as all the aftermarket headers for the ZX are pretty much all the same. It's quality you need to be concerned with. You want a header that's not going to crack 5000 miles down the road. Motorsport Auto sells a few different headers. Check them out and ask which ones get the best response from the customers and racers.

I still can't remember the MSA site

If you've got the greenery then this clutch definitely offers the best of both worlds.

The stock clutch or the factory 'turbo' clutch will do just fine for your engine. It'll be a lot easier on your foot too.

you can cut 6 holes in the fender and run straight pipes right out the side

NO holes in the fenders! I have spent no small amount of time shaving the marker lights, the emblems, and those rivet on moldings that come on every junkyard Z fender I see. Im an auto body tech in CA, so it's all been done right.

I'm also going to be getting a set of MSA headers when the time comes. I've heard good things and they've been used in competition.

If nothing else, I like the looks of the MSA 3-2-1 header, it reminds me of the "180" header setup on my boss' modified. I think thats what I will end up buying.

The header will allow the engine to make more power by allowing it to 'breathe' better.

When it comes to headers it's a two sided battle just like anything else on an engine. If you're looking for top end power then you're going to want shorter primaries. If it's torque you want then longer primaries will produce more power down low which is preferable for street driving. Don't get me wrong, we're talking inches here as any decent header is going to have quite long primaries no matter what.

I HAVE DONE THE MODS YOU SPEAK OF .....HAVE FUN IT'S WORTH EVERY $$ ....BLEACH AND I BELEAVE THAT IT's NOT WORTH adding a big throttle body unless you have a bigger cam and a ported intake ....all you will be doing is adding more gas and not being able to burn it up and push it out .....i have a jsk fuel rail and fpr ....it over fuels alittle....... with a bigger throttle body it would over fuel even more ....iam going to wait untell i get a cam then add a bigger throttle body......... just my take on it ......the msa header is the way to go ....just rember that with a msa header you will be slower off the line but faster in the upper end ....
