Earl Scheib Paint Job

I was just thinking about getting a paint job from an Earl Scheib since it is going to be a daily driver. Here is the one I would get. It doesn't seem like it would be too bad? What does everyone else think?

I'll second that. Definitely do the prep work yourself (or have another body shop do it). The ONLY thing you want them to do is spray the paint.

Ugh . . .no offense but you can do a better job yourself never having done it before. Those Macco, Miricle, Earl Shawb whatevers all do the same crappy work. Just take the time to prep it your self and take it to a cheap auto body shop in town to have it sprayed. Unless you can work a deal with someone who will do your car on the side, using their facilities and who you know does decent work . . .fuggetaboutit. Do it your self and save some money.

* Infrared Quartz Finish drying....Huh????
* Final cleaning....they siad final!!!
* Many additional colors.....is the car going to look like a rainbow???
* Paint coat #3 (base coat) for a uniform finish.....Yup, more paint. I guess they plan on missing some spots then???
* Bumper & Tire Conditioner....lather rinse repete???
* Additional sanding & preparation for adhesion....Am I the only one here throwing up a red flag???
* Integrated clear coat
* "Starfire Colors"
* Extra final cleaning....they said final already!!!
* True separate Euro-Clean top coat....sounds sporty!
* Ultraviolet sunscreen gloss hardener protector....I bet they paint many cars in one day.

I would first visit the facility and inspect their work on freshly painted vehicles. There's good painters and there's bad ones. The name of a facility isn't of the utmost importance - it's their employees' quality of work that you need to evaluate before making your decision.

I had Jade painted by Maaco in 1994, then again in 2003 - that's how long the paint lasted before it started webbing - well worth the $800 I paid back in 1994, and they had to do extensive body work on the driver's side door, cuz someone tried to break into her, using a crow bar all around the lock, and the hood had numerous tiny dents.

Her 2003 paint job was around $1,200, and I stripped her down myself that time before taking her in - completely gutted the interior, including carpet (nothing left but the driver's seat, dash and steering wheel), and removed the air dam, bumpers, headlights, tail lights, marker lenses, side mirrors (those must be removed, cuz it's difficult to spray paint them on the front sides, where rust tends to accumulate, and the paint tends to crack in those areas cuz it's difficult to sand those areas before painting), antenna, wipers, rear spoiler, side louvers, etc.

If you do strip your Z beforehand, I would highly recommend placing the bolts, nuts and screws in plastic Ziploc baggies, and marking each with a piece of masking tape as to the body part, cuz it's a real pita to put her back together properly otherwise.

BTW, Jade has won over 13 trophies and was featured in 2 magazines with her Maaco paint jobs.

Trust what everybody said about them painting your car. My wife several yrs ago took her car in without me knowing about it and it took me over 2 hrs to clean the overspray off. The paint lasted less than a yr (the guy had the nerve to tell me it was one of their better jobs, ha ha). I repainted in my yard and it came out better. If you sand and get all of the wax, finger prints etc, then mask the car there are some paint shops which will cut a deal. I found one once and painted the car myself. I don't recommend doing the painting yourself unless you have done several (I used the paint shop on base when I was in the Air Force and they will give you advice until you learn.) Good Luck

dude do not get it painted there, i am sorry to say i worked at macco, i needed a job at the time, its totally not worth it. they sand your car in 1 hour, mask it in 1 hour, paint and detail in 1 hour, we actually had customers wait for there car to be done in the waiting room, 3 hours and boom, new color. heck drive up here, ill paint it in base clear, and itll last far far longer.

they use cheaper paint but for a driver??? If you do the prep yourself and get out the dings, chips etc. You are only paying them to spray it. Chekc on their masking. Did my sons Honda accord at Maaco and we sanded down the clear coat cancer, bondo the dings, sanded out the chips. Paint was good for the two years before we sold it. Not show car quality but heh looked good at the high school compared to the crap the other kids were driving.

$800 for an Earl Scheib paint job? I used Earl when it was $99.99 on my 1977 Camaro. I got it painted turquoise. It was worth it for the daily driver. I did all the prep work myself & the paint job lasted about 5 yrs when I sold the car... But mask the windows themselves once you get there... I remember that I couldn't see out the windshield when I took it home & had to use a razor blades to scrape the excess off. I had to do that to whatever chrome I left on the car too. I wish Rain X existed back then it might have prevented ... So Rain X ing the windows might be a good idea too.
Good idea to take off anything you dont want painted too...LOL I remember the tires had a nice turquiose tint as well.....
