Clutch Slips.....I think......
Clutch Slips.....I think......
I guess I should give a little background to start...
My N/A '82 5spd was in some guy's barn for 3 or 4 years. Ryan82ZX found it, bought it cheap, then I bought it from him. I don't know what all's wrong with it from sitting in the guy's barn.
So anyway, my clutch slips a little. The thing is, it's new. It slipped when Ryan got the car. He got a new clutch from Ebay and put it in, and it slipped right out of the box, then seemed to lock up fine for a week or so, then started slipping again. If he sees this post he might be able to give a little more on that.
Anyway, it doesn't slip on a cold start. I have to drive it somewhere from 5-10 miles before it will slip at all. Then it will slip under moderate accelleration. Is that normal for a slipping clutch? I've never had to deal with one before.
I was talking to my uncle last night, and he thought it might be a problem with something other than the clutch. He couldn't remember what the part was called (he's 74 years old, guess it comes with age
). Any chance it could be something other than the clutch itself? If there's any possibility of that, I'd rather do that than just go replace the whole clutch again with the possibility of it still slipping.
On the way to church this morning I had about a 5 mile stretch of highway in 5th gear after I'd already driven 5 miles through the country. When I hit 5th gear as soon as I got on the highway, I punched it without downshifting and it didn't slip a bit. At the end of the 5 mile stretch I turned off the cruise, punched it, and it slipped! That makes me think it's the clutch itself, rather than another part because there was there was no shifting or pressing of the clutch in between the time it grabbed and the time it slipped.
Open to suggestions, maybe I just need to pony up and get a whole new clutch...... or do a SBC/T56 swap...............

My car used to do that every once in a while too. It would come and go but it was never really a bad slip. I don't have that anymore because it's got a centerforce 2 in it now. I have heard this from other people though. I know the slave cylinder on these cars has always been a weak link, but not real sure if that would have anything to do with it. Nissan throw-out bearings in general have always been suspect... that may be more likely.

Okay, to give a little more information! I bought the clutch on ebay as Decksetter said, It is a gripforce and was claimed to be a stock replacement unit. I got it and installed it with the help of Decksetter. Ever since then it slipped just like he said. Sometimes it will lock up and spin the tires, other times it will slip like crazy. I have done many clutches and the only thing I didn't do was surface the flywheel, but I don't do that every time and that has not been a problem in the past with other vehicles. So I don't know if that will help any but there it is.
P.S. The pedal feels very light, any suggestions

This thing is weirding me out. I drove it again tonight, it wouldn't slip even when it was all warm after a 15+ mile drive. The only differences this time were that it was raining pretty good and I was shifting sub-2500rpms and taking off slowly.
It is possible that the clutch or pedal is getting hung up and causing it to partially disengage(kinda like riding the clutch pedal). Other possible causes could be that the clutch disc is not aligned properly. Check the bellhousing to block bolts to make sure they're all tight. If the flywheel was warped at all then it would have needed to be resurfaced or replaced. And last but not least if the clutch disc has glazed over then it's going to have a hell of a time gripping under torqued. But it really sounds like something is not aligned properly or the clutch is just plain faulty. It happens. The best thing you can do is to drop the tranny and inspect the clutch. Check the flywheel and see if needs to be resurfaced. If it's glazed then it's not going to grab well. If everything looks fine then just try reinstalling it taking extra caution to see if anything is hanging up somewhere or out of alignment. If it still slips after all that, then I would suggest replacing it.
