82 280zx Turbo info
hey guys, brand new to the site. don't know as much as a lot of you guys and was wondering if you had any tips or advice for me.
I just bought a 1982 280zx turbo manual for $780. my 2 friends and i are planning on restoring it over summer. right now it has some rust patches on the rocker panels, under the fuel cap, and a couple other spots, but it isnt very bad. engine has 115k original but i think its misfiring on 1-2 cylinders. interior is in okay shape, not the best.
our plans for the car are to rebuild most of the engine. none of us are extremely skilled in engine work but we know the basics and i figure chilton and neighbors will help out some too. the plan is to probably clean and replace the parts that need it, and throw in a couple performance parts like a cold air intake or something else.
for the interior we plan to get new carpet, apholstery, and make it look real nice. then a nice new paint job and fix the basics.
basically get the car to look awesome while bringing the engine back to its awesome state.
i was wondering if anyone had any tips of must-haves, things to watch out for, any good sites to buy things, trial and error, basically any knowledge you have at all would help me out a ton. we're running on the budget of three 17 year olds with summer jobs, so we're not talking anything crazy, but we plan to invest maybe 2-3 thousand in the car. its not in terrible shape, but just want to make it awesome. going for style and speed, but not track speed or anything.

Welcome to the boards, that's cool you all are going to do a resto on a turbo coupe. Well, you can take a look at my cardomain site, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you are: building on a tight budget. The best things for performance you can do would probably be an exhaust, intercooler, boost controller and mildly upgraded fuel system. I'm using an adjustable fuel pressure regulator with 370cc injectors (stock is ~260cc) and the boost is set to about 9 psi, with 10 used at the track. (I'll shoot higher when I get my headgasket changed to a metal one)
Some things to look out for while you're restoring the body, look under the battery tray, you might need a flashlight since it's riveted on there, but that place is notorious for rust. Check the frame rails in the engine compartment as well. When taking apart the engine, the studs on the engine for the exhaust/intake gasket like to break, so spray them down with a bunch of penetrating lube and let it soak for a day before you try to break the nut loose from it. Same deal goes with the factory downpipe since that cast iron will probably be rusted shut. I also had to take a pipe cleaner and clean the inside of the EGR tube out, 22 years of junk had settled inside it and was causing it malfunction. Just use some good carb/choke cleaner to break up the buildup.
