weird wiring problem

The only way anything will work on my 79 Z is to have the car running. I replaced the alternator because it was over charging. THEN it was charging okay, but now the ammeter is dead. and nothing will work unless the car is running. EXCEPT the headlights and turn signals. Last night the side makrer lights would not work at all but today they are back on if the car is running. The horn, interior lights, wipers, heater/A/C blower, radio and about everything else is non functional if the car is NOT running.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have checked the car from top to bottom with my meter and can not find the problem.

I would really appreciate any ideas you might have.

I had this problem when I got my Zed. Both battery cables on my car were red, and I didn't realize which cable I attached where until it was too late. I fried all the fusible links in my car. After those went, nothing worked, aside from the engine bay light.

My suggestion would be to check the fusible links. I would stretch and say your entire electrical problem is sourced from there.

Hope that helps,

Thanks

I have a parts car and I shotgunned mine using parts from that one. I replaced the fusible links AND the relays and that did the trrick. More than likely it was the fusible links.

Thanks a bunch for your help.
