Tranny won't go in any gear!

Well I was just on my way to emissions to restest my Z. All went well until about 3 or 4 miles from my house. And I was stuck at a light, and could not get my car to go into any gear. So I am dead in the water right now. I did limp him home in 3rd gear, with my hazards on. Also when I tried to put it into hear, the tranny would squeal a high pitch. Like a screee!!! So any help would be much appreciated. Until then it is back to driving my Celica.

You check the clutch fluid reservoir?

WildmaN 03-23-2006 01:07 PM

Yes I did, full like it should be.

NismoPick 03-23-2006 01:13 PM

Has it been bled? When was the last time the tranny fliud was changed?

Start w/ having someone pump the clutch petal while you are under the tranny looking at the slave cylinder... make sure it is pushing the clutch fork. I am saying this because it's most likely the hydralic system. If it were your syncro's, it would have been grinding when switching between gears.

WildmaN 03-23-2006 01:16 PM

Unfortunately I don't have anybody to help me out right now. And to top it off, I can't find the key to my Celica. Arggghhh!!

WildmaN 03-23-2006 01:17 PM

And I put fresh gear oil in my tranny when I did the swap. And I also bled my slave cylinder, when I changed it 2 weeks ago.

Will it go into gear when the engine is off?

gstyles31 03-23-2006 01:25 PM

I had the same problem on my 90' NA auto and I had to replace the torque converter, neutral switch, and replace fluid.

that really does not apply here.

How long since the clutch and it's components have been changed? If the pedal still has pressure and it's still not going into gear than chances are its part of the clutch. Sounds to me like the clutch doesn't want to disengage.

IF the pedal doesn't have the pressure it should then chances are you've got a hydraulic problem. Clutch master or slave cylinder. But those dont usually fail all of a sudden. They'll give warning that they're going out.

WildmaN 03-23-2006 01:28 PM

Yes it goes into gear with no problem when the engine is off. That is how I got him back home. I put him into gear with the engine off. And then started it, and limped him home.

jfairladyz 03-23-2006 01:29 PM

Pedal pressure?

jfairladyz 03-23-2006 01:30 PM

Since it goes into gear when the cars off you can rule out transmission failure as a possiblity ;)

WildmaN 03-23-2006 01:32 PM

Yeah there is pedal pressure. And I am still trying to find my Celica key. I might have to call into work. I basically right now, have no car.

jfairladyz 03-23-2006 01:34 PM

I'm going to have to say clutch then. Be it the disc, cover, release bearing or bearing fork. Whatever, it's probably got something to do with the disengagment process. Make sure the slave cylinder rod is seated properly before you start tearing into anything though. If thats askew or bent it can cause issues.

WildmaN 03-23-2006 02:02 PM

Also when I would be sitting in first gear with him running. The squeal would be constant. And it looks like I am calling in to work. I can't find my Celica key anywhere!! What else could go wrong, maybe I shouldn't ask.

RodMoyes 03-23-2006 02:13 PM

Throw out and or pilot bearing = DEAD.

Sorry dude.

Rod.

WildmaN 03-23-2006 02:28 PM

The throwout bearing is brand new though. Well anyway I am going to my folks with my Z limping, so I can jack him up. And my brother is going to help me out on it. Will let you know what happens.

RodMoyes 03-23-2006 03:53 PM

New doesn't always = good. Ask one of my techs about the pathfinder clutch job he got to do twice last week because a brand new throw out bearing was defective... :( he wasn't happy. :) That may not be your issue, but it sure sounds like it could be.

Rod.

jfairladyz 03-23-2006 04:31 PM

Definitely sounds like something along those lines. Especially with the squealing sound.

WildmaN 03-23-2006 08:42 PM

Well I replaced the slave cylinder, it seemed to be back to normal. I get down the street, and it acts up again. So I just got back from getting a clutch master cylinder. Because there are some instances, where I can get it into gear. And other, I have to cram it to go in place. Anyway I am going outside in a bit. And put the new clutch master on. I am sure it is the original one. And the car has 194,000, we will see, and thanks for all the help.

If it turns out to not be the master either. Then I start digging into the internal parts of the tranny, and clutch system. Which means the Z will be down, until it is fixed. And my 30 day tags expire tomorrow.

Lost Vegaz 03-23-2006 09:07 PM

Does the Z have a adjustment rod?? On the back of the clutch pedal, the rod that pushes into the clutch master, is that rod adjustable?? On my 3kgt and several other cars that I have had to do clutch's on, after the new clutch is installed, you have to adjust that rod by turning it either in or out more to get the proper engagement. Is it is held by 1 or 2 jam nuts. So is the Z's rod adjustable or no??

jfairladyz 03-23-2006 09:54 PM

Yeah the Z's is adjustable too.

Lost Vegaz 03-23-2006 10:54 PM

So Wildman, did you try to adjust that rod?? That rod controls how much fluid gets moved, and the fluid moves the slave which moves the knee which moves the shin bone, Oh wait, did I get the wrong parts?? You get the idea!

By the way, 400 posts for me, yeah me
