So how slow are these things?

Any ideas on why my ZEEEEeeee car is so freakin slow? I mean it's got 6 cylinders right? I haven't opened the hood yet. Just bought the car a week ago. I was thinking if the motor is shot I might go for a F20-C out of a S2000. Any thoughts? My boy just hit a fire hyrdent in his 2001 S2000. He'll sell it ta me for real cheap.
There's this weird "crunching" noise when I shift the car. What could be causing this? Is there like a walnut or something stuck in the linkage? I guess I'll call it the nut-cracka
Oh and there's this funky "clunk" coming from the rear under hard acceleration (I flog this bitch all day long just to keep up with construction trucks and ****). Is there something I can stick in there as a temporary fix until I can get the funds together for something new?
What are the biggest rims you can stuff under this thing? I've got some spare Honda wheels lying around (some fool lost a drag race to me and I took um, Not in this slow *** POS (my v6 camaro squeezing a 50 shot)). Are these cars 4x100mm like the Honduhs?
Thanks guys I hope to be hearing from you all

114,3 *4. I don´t remember the offset but its hard to find rims with the correct offset. If you really want to use the honda rims I´m sure you can find a shop that can machine them so they will fit, but you´ll probably need a set of spacers too.
It all depends on what you think is slow. If you can't keep up with construction vehicles, then your engine is shot. My Datsun truck is faster than that. I won't take that comment litterally though.
The engine is a 2.8L 6-cyl which is not all that big compared to late model cars. The technology in the engine is about 27 years old. Single overhead cam limits air flow to one valve going in or out of a cylinder while most late model engines have dual cams. The compression is a low 8.5 or 8.8:1 ratio depending on what year your 280ZX is. Modern engines run 9.5 to 10.5:1 compresion. The 350Z is at 10.3:1
The intake manifold has small runners and a small throttle body to give the driver smooth control over the engine and maximize midrange torque. The car has a lot more torque than it does high rpm horsepower. The older 280zx has a higher geared rear differential which doesn't go well with an engine of that size in my opinion. That also slows down your acceleration. Your transmission syncros are shot, your rear end bushing or half-shafts are shot, and I would guess that your engine has high miles and is tired.

Hey, bring that V6 Camaro to Chattanooga. My Z is hungry for ANOTHER bowtie burger. Go ahead and slap in a 100 shot so you don't get so embarrased. Second thought--just stay home. I'm not wasting my time with any more wannabes.

Spoken like a true Chevy driver. By the way, you need a 50 shot in a Camaro to beat a Honda? Now there's something to brag about!! Can you get your foot any farther in your mouth? You Bowtie guys really crack me up!

that is pretty sad having to use a nitrous to beat a civic!!!! v6 cameros are the real "pos"cars! man you shouldnt come around here if your gonna talk bad about a z! if you thought it was a "pos" car you wouldnt have bought it and if you expected to buy a car being stock and it be outragiously fast you can keep dreaming unless you wanna shed out the money for sumthing like a zo6 or lambo, porshe. a smart person would buy a car like a z, mod it to the point of their disire and spend less money than person who bought the outragousily expensive car and have the same performance or better and be completelty satisfied. thats my .02 cents, what it matters who knows but oh well LOL

I think you made a wrong decision purchasing an old Z car. These cars are old and they need a lot of attention before they can be brought back to their prime. If you don't have the time or the patience to restore her then you should consider moving onto a newer vehicle. Also, just so you know...you should check to see what a lot of us are running on our turbo's in this board. I can assure you that most of us have spent a lot of time and money on our motors. Do some re-search on the net. Read what other people have done to their Z's. Learn it, buy the parts and go from there...

Well said RatedZ.
Bring that V6 Camaro with the biggest shot you can run. I assure you the clunk in my Z's rearend is repaired.
BTW, some of those construction vehicles can keep up pretty good when they turn up the boost, seen the turbo diesel pickups run 14s at 5800' altitude.

well first of all, Z cars are classic insturments that must be babied, and second anyone can beat a honda, so don't brag. Third, my z will beat your camaro any day any time, no matter what you have on it. And as for your Z and it's problems: First check your u-joints that could be the clank in the back you are hearing. The grinding from shifting, did you ever think that maby your clutch might be going out? you did buy an older car so now you have to deal with the problems. And also with these cars you have to know that when you shift if you shift to hard the rear end hits because the car is so low. That is might be another reason you hear the clank in the back.
