Smoke and water/coolent
Hello everyone. My first time posting been reading for about a month now though, and I'm in need of some help. I'm kinda new to the auto and ZX world. So talk slow. =P
Okay here's what's up. I own a 5-speed 1982 280ZX coupe n/a. Pretty much everthing on it is stock sept for the distributer, distributer wires, spark plugs, alternator, and one fule injector (probly going to be two after today). I changed the oil and the filter last week, and have had this car for about a month or two now. Well my dad changed the oil and he put some funky gunk in it call "Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer." It's supose to seal worn cylinders to slow oil consumption, and cool and quiet the engine and gear box.
My problems are when it's first started in the morning it spits out white smoke like you wouldn't beleave and it has the hardest time starting, but after driving it for anywhere between 2-5 minutes it's stops smoking, and on top of that my car doesn't seem to like to keep water/coolent in the radiator. There are no real signs of external leaking for it. My friend says that white smoke is usely the cause of burning coolent. So I'm wanting to think that that might be the problem.
Any help/suggestions/what ever would be given great thanks.

white smoke
Hey Bud, white smoke is usually fuel or water, if you are seeing the smoke when you start after its sat a good while then it sounds like could be an injecter dripping fuel after you shut down.Try before you start it (when you know its gonna smoke) take out plugs and look for a wet cylinder. May want to spin it over with plugs out (and coil wire off) just to see if any fuel or water come out. If its fuel, its an injecter, if its water then its gonna be a cracked head or head gasket. And you said it did not want to keep water in the engine so sounds like its gonna be in the head. If you have a plug thats discolored more than the rest check that cylinder closely........Also the lucas oil treatment is ok and want hurt anything......

Ok test the compression first before pulling it apart !
When the engine is cold take off the raidator cap start it up if your head gasket is stuffed it will blow bubbles !
Get someone to pressurize the cooling system too this will see if its leaking or blown.

Yeah there're bubbles in the radiator. My dad checked it the other day, and said it was bubbling. Along with blowing out blue smoke or something like that. So it's the head gasket/block. I hope. ^^; If not, I'm not gonna complain any. My parents are paying for the repairs. Now if only I could get them to pay for mods as well. =P

Check out www.hybridZ.com , both the Chevy and Ford forums. The engines fit, and the Ford weighs about the same as the Z engine. I'm lusting to do an SBF swap, but have to convince the dear wife.

More help with the ZX
OKay, it's me again. I'm outside right now trying to remove the intake se we can get to the head gasket. I need to know how many bolts on on the intake, so far I've only removed 4. Is that all or is there more?
~Edit~ Welll... That sucked the intake just like busted. x_x Still need to know how many bolts though. Thank god for parts cars. =P
Thanks,
-Derek

Dont know right off top of my head but if you disconnect everything on intake and exhaust you can lift off it all still attached to head. Will need help, sure all together its a little heavy.............

dude!!! you didnt even need to take off the intake or exhaust manifold to take the head off the block... all you needed to do was disconect the wire harness from the intake and all the hoses and fuel lines from it and disconect the exhaust from the exhaust manifold and take the head with the manifolds off the block as one unit!!!!! its a lot easier to take the intake and exhaust manifold off the head when the head is off the car... but when you put the head back on dont put it back on with the intake and exhause manifold on... thats just my tip!!! ive dont that job a few times already.. and not just on my Z..

*facepalm!* Baaaaka!
Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to do that when we're taking off the intake on the parts car we have. Thank god for that thing no? =) That should be a bit easier. Speicaly when we go and replace the intake on the working ZX.
