Cool, DoTheDrew888. That is interesting that you figure that your setup is fuel limited, I would think personally that a rising rate fuel pressure regulator coupled with standard FI would be plenty. Although, the SU carbs will definitly get more fuel in, but being carbs are finicky and require a bit more tuning than I feel compelled to do. You have the big bore though. In summation, just an interesting decision in my view.

Yeah, it could turn out to be a bad decision I guess but oh well. I could always switch back if I really wanted to. Also, I just like the old school feel of a carburated engine. I also hate electrical crap and I love mechanical tuning. To me, tuning carbs is a hell of a lot easier than playing with the FI system trying to get the car perfect.

i agree whole-heartedly.. i prefer mechanical tuning much more than electronic.. i love older cars because they are before evrything relies on the electronic bullshit.. one shouldbe able to run their car mechanically sound without one ioda of electronic dependancy. i cant stand having to upgrade elctronic bullshit.. id rather be able to adjust any aspect of any system without having an ECU to program. carbureted is the way to go.

think about this.. the top fuel dragsters use carburetors and they produce 8000-10000 HP!!! granted theyre using another type of fuel.. but the fact that one can still produce unimaginable #s like that on a mechanical system is freakin amazing... im only lookin to maybe get up to ~450HP. and that is entirely achievable thru a carbureted system.. you can go either way.. its all in how you prefer.. but i am with drew on this.. and hopefully well get to see lots o' picz

and also.. at very high RPMS.. not only does one have valve float to worry about.. but also injectors are and electronically controlled mechanical device and it allows for a larger margin of error.. with carbureted.. the fuel is already in the air and it travels to whichever cylinder has its valve open.. fuel injection is gonna spray irregardless if the valve is open or not..

That's the way it was designed and always has been. That is so the air inside the manifold has fuel mixture in it and then when a valve opens the air and fuel goes in just like the carbs.

true.. but its all about concentration.. in carburetion the concentration is the same throughout.. FI is heavier until the air pushes into the cylinder.. i was told FI is more prone to detonation than carburetion due to this fact

FI runs more lean, closer to the 'ideal' mixture so therefore it would be more prone to possible detonation. It also is more prone to running smoother and delivering more power.

i see the advantages and disadvantages of both.. i prefer a more mechanical method though.. and besides.. its not like many, if any, dragsters run FI...

a mechanical part will wear.. but an electronically controlled mechanical part will wear and allows for more error..

Hey assimilated post some pics of your Z. I love that 2 tone paint! That is what I am painting my '82 Zx like! Also does your Z have blue and silver 2 tone interior too?

ill see about getting some pictures.. yeah i love that blue/silver 2 tone myself.. however it needs to be repainted and the interior is well... not in good condition.. but when i get the $$(which gods knows when..) i plan on getting it all redone .. My next Z.. will prolly be a 300ZX turbo all black or black/silver 2-tone..

They now make do it yourself ecu kits for all FI and turbo engines. They eliminate the distributor. You can record previous runs and tune it from a laptop. You can tune it in 50 rpm incremnts or curves if you want. Includes spark retard for easy starts, fire up to 12 injecters including metanol/water injection, nitrous. It has over-boost retard to protect your engine and even knock sensor retard. Before this I would'nt consider buiding an FI/turbo engine. The top fuel cars do not have carbs. Pro stock does but they are tuners now too.

oh top fuel does run FI?? i know Pro stock doesnt.. well i stand corrected.. but even still.. too much electronic bullshit.. if you know what youre doing.. you dont need all that modify-able bologna..

Deliver more power Bleach? I think you mean that some EFI systems can deliver more power. The stock ZX system is VERY restrictive and delivers much less power than carbs. If you run Mega Squirt than thats a whole different story but that is also much more expensive than carbs. Basically, why spend a bunch of money on upgrading the intake system and FI system when you can just buy carbs?
