SCORE LSD for my 280zxt

So I picked up a 88 300zxt for $500 today! It runs great and I drove it home! Finaly a CLSD!! Whats great too, is that a guy already offered me $1000 for it without the rear end. SWEET! Just got a few questions about the swap. Is it a straight swap for the rear ends? What rear end cover do I use the 280zx cover or the 300zx cover? And what rear end oil do you guys run in them and is there an additive I should put in for the LSD? Thanx

really nice for 500 bucks! at least 3x as nice as mine was, for 1/2 as much cost. Therefore, it is really 3x 1/2 as good, which means is only 1.5 times better. so there. not much at all.

lol. tis nice indeed, and its cool that youll be able to double your investment quickly. Do you know his plans/

Man, that Z is in nice shape. Seems to be a shame to strip the rear end out of it. You should sell it, and get the quaife pumpkin. NismoPick can explain it better for you. Good luck, with whatever you decide to do.

I think he just wants a sports car and get decent gas mileage. But I dont plan on tearing the 300zxt up just swaping the diffs out, so the 280 will have an lsd and the 300 will have open. So can any one tell me what oil to use in the lsd ?

Do I need to get a different speedo gear so the speedometer will still read right with the 3.7 gears.

Which speedo gear do I use? And which diff cover do I use? I think I read some where that the finned one wont fit on a 280zx.

You use the speedo gear for the diff you are using... thus the reason the speedo gear is "geared" to the differential gear.

The finned cover fits 280zx's, it does NOT fit S30's (240z-280z) due to the cross member support.

LSD installed in my 280zxt:

I use the Redline 75W145. There are two versions - one has a friction modifier which I use in my 300ZX Vert (which is a LSD) and my 240Z and 280ZX get the Redline without the friction modifier (which are open diffs). (Oh and Redline 90MT for all my transmissions)

I don't think I'm asking this quetion right, so I'll try again. My speedo will be telling me I'm going a different speed then what I'm really going. With the different gears in it(3.54 to 3.7). So to make the speedo tell me the right speed I'm going, what do I need to change? And Nismo I see in your pic you have the axles, will my cv axles fit in to that rear end? Thanx for all your help guys.

Grab the speedo cog on the transmission (located on the transmission, where the speedo cable attaches).

Yes... the splines are the same for all long nose R200's, and the cv axles are the same length. It's LITERALLY plug & play.

In case you are wondering, no, you can't use the Z31 axles.

Thanx again for the help. Anything else I need to know before I do the swap. I was thinking about taking it to an axle shop and having them check out it and have the seals replaced.

As seen in the pic, you definitely need to change the cover gasket. Most parts stores don't stock it, so you'll either need to have it shipped in, or just buy a sheet of "do it yourself" gasket maker and cut one out (as I did for mine). I imagine you could buy the shaft seals from Nissan if they were torn, or just use the ones from your stock R200.

No need to waste money on a shop for something you can do yourself...
