I just got a 81 datsun 280zx and the bottom is so rusted i could not lift it with a hydrolics jack how can i fix this? Is there anyway to reinforce the rusted out metal? And if there is a way how much would it cost?
Thanks I hope I can get this problem resolved because I don't want to take it to the junk yard...

On my 79 I had alot of underboy rot and a couple holes... actually 4 holes to be exact... I brought it to the body shop and they cut the holes out and the surrounding rust and weldded new sheet metal. as far as the sides for the jack, one side was bad so he welded a new groove for me... All that and an undercoat to try to help reduce future rust was less then a grand of work... close to 800

If you're willing to go the extra mile, you could check with some metal fabricators/welders and try to get estimates, so you'll have a better idea of what you're in for.BTW, my 80 has the same problem, and, to me, it's just not worth it to pay $2,000 (that's what I was quoted) to repair it. I know of no one who'd want to buy it in it's current condition and repair the extensive rust damage. So, I'm in the process of stripping it and hauling it off to Z heaven. It will really sadden me to close the casket, but she's apparently lived a traumatic life, judging from the abuse of the previous owner, so I believe it's time to let her rest in peace.
It's nice to know how much you care about saving your Z, RoadPizza. Good luck and best wishes on your decision.
just my $.02
have you tried www.datsunzparts.com? They carry the floor panels, including the frame rails, that run from the firewall to the metal rise right behind the rear seat for just under $400 dollars. Well here, check this out, http://www.datsunzparts.com/Summary.htm.
good luck
