new 83 turbo 5spd project.

hey everyone..

just got home with a 83 turbo 5spd. has 134k, and is fairly clean and rust free.

its all original and was pretty well taken care of.. but.....

it doesnt run... it was parked about a year or two ago with a problem of having very little power. according to previous owner it would be able to start up and move itself, but it wouldnt have much power to get above 10mph.

i just got this car home today so i havent had time to play with it, but i do have a brand new battery to toss in and try.

the car had the ecu replaced no more than 10 years ago.
oil and coolant and fluids all look nice still.
tires, exhaust, frame rails, fuel/brake lines,.. everything appears clean and virtually rust free on the underside.

--thats the jist of the information i have on it... just wondering if anyone has some ideas ... as to what i should look into right off before, or after i put new battery and new fuel and filter to it.

appreciate it.

Test or replace the CHTS, inspect all sensor and ignition wire connectors. The 82 I bought had a similar problem and the CHTS connector was bad. Pulling the plugs is easy on these engines so I would go ahead and take a look at there condition for reference. Inspect and clean if necessary the ground wires. Remove old fuel, add fresh and new filter. That should get you started, good luck!

today i put in new k&n airfilter, and couple of new gallons of fuel ontop of a year old quarter tank of fuel.. put in new battery and all electronics powered up just fine. i know all the plug wires, plugs, rotor, are all new.

turned key to on position and fuel pump kicked in, i waited a second or two.. then cranked the engine and it instantly started up.. but it ran fairly rough and was sputtering some and could barely rev up.. the car didnt smoke or anything. today was a sunny 75 degree day. it could run without me on the throttle. but ran better with the throttle cracked slightly

today i pulled the chts and inspected it.. it had no corrosion on it anywhere except the connections itself.. i cleaned the sensor connections to the point of having two nice copper tabs.. put a brand new connector on, and sparingly put on electrical grease and it clicked in nice..

started up the car, and same issue.. runs, but runs poorly and sputters alot. .. ..it barely revs up when u crack the throttle.

could this be turbo related?

I would pull up the carpet in the back, so you don't have to drop the gas tank, check that, I would have also siphoned all the old gas out, that made a HUGE difference in my Z. I would also do a BG Fuel System service, and an Engine flush with BG 109, drive it pretty hard for 30 minutes, get all that carbon off the rings and all that good stuff, then add MOA when you fill it with new oil.

An inline fuel pressure gauge would help determine if that is the problem. A blocked line/pickup can very well be it. I have seen some very horrid gauge/pickup assemblies. Remove the assembly from the trunk access (described in FSM). Use carb cleaner to spray off the prefilter and spray down the pick up and return lines and check for good flow. I have seen both a caked up prefilter with fine rust/gunk and a gunked up line in the assembly. If you do have clogged stuff you probably want drop the tank and clean it out too. Also if you have old gas in there get rid of it!!! Good luck!

i was also thinking this could be fuel related.. but the car was never parked for a extreme period of time.. it was only parked since last summer.. since i got it home i added about 2 new gallons. changed fuel filter in the engine bay to a filter that is a semi-clear plastic to see the fuel flow through while running..
the fuel pump kicks in normally and i started it and watch the fuel gush through that filter i put in.

il try and rev the car by just cracking open the throttle, itl rev a little but itl sputter and sometimes make a pop/small backfire into the intake.

Don't use one of those filters! They're usually for carb'd cars and will eventually crack/explode in your bay when you get decent fuel pressure.
