exhaust manifold
 

hey everyone, i am newly diZsd and this is my first post.i gave my baby to this incompetent loser at midas a while back to replace an exhaust gasket. as you probably guessed, he broke 2 studs and tried to fix it by dumping silicone all over the place.my car sounds like a lawnmower.oh he also broke off the rear eye for the hoist chain.any ideas on how i could remove the exhaust manifold without compounding my problems. also any suggestions on which tool to beat that guy with? i was thinking ball joint separator but am open to suggestions. thanks

You're going to have to get pretty involved. He probably did not even replace the gasket as he figured out that the intake manifold is also over the same gasket so maybe he just put sillicone all over the broken exhaust gasket. Remove the intake manifold by first removing the fuel rail. You can leave all the wires hooked up. Set some towels as a coushin on the fender/radiator and put the intake over there. Remove the manifold and it should bend back a bit, leaving the exhaust attached, or you can disconnect it with three bolts. Somtimes those are very rusted, so if the exhaust pipe connection is good then leave it. Remove the old gasket material, fix the studs and then you can put on a fresh intake/exhaust gasket.

First of all, i wouldnt' pay for the work. Demand they do the job right or have it done elsewhere and send them the bill. 'Small Claims Court' ...if you have the time.

As for beating them with a tool, go for the Duwalt Cordless Drill. Choose your favorite attachment!

i agree with BleachZee you shouldnt have to pay for someones F**k Ups... sometimes the broken studs are so frozen in the holes that you might have to drill them out and te tap the hole.. or worse case put new threads in.. as for a good tool to beat the guy with.. id say a very large prybar... use the handle end and swing away... lol

thanks guys i agree. i didnt pay $ but i did pay in headpain. he shouldve told me instead of playing riggit. and i think ive decided to go with the oxyacetylene torch. YEAH. you all can come. bring marshmellows.

lol i hate stupid mechanics like taht....what a moron...if that happened to my dad he would take the guy to court for total new manifold and everything....(my dad sues everyone lol, and gets results)....how bout you string him up on a cherry picker and then get an impact hammer......

you can prolly sue the guy for a new head... jsut a thought!

Beat him with a tool??? How about shooting him instead so he won't screw up any more cars. HAHA:D

Exhaust manifold bolts
 

Apparently the manifold bolts tend to break of frequently.

Since mine was broken off before I pruchased my car.

Yes that is true, mine either broke or someother way made it leak when i got it, and it had a little bit of the lawnmowyer/sprinkler sound but i dont really notice it anymore... Either it went away, I got used to it, or that my cars exhaust is so loud now that you cant even hear it.

That is kind of funny, since after I got the stud fixed, my fron-exhaust pipe got a whole, then after I got a new one, the rest of my exhaust behind the cat. converter became all loud. So now I got a new exhaust system, but now the exhaust manifold, or somewhere around there is all loud again. Stupid exhaust system.

If you have a new exhaust pipe done, try to get the person doing the install to hang it with those thick rubber straps (new ones) instead of welding it with metal tabs to the car. When the engien revvs or the car moves, the engine does rock a tiny bit. If the exhaust pipe is held secure it will put a lot of stress on the manifold bolts at the head and at the pipe connection. The straps let the pipe move just a bit relieveing some stress on the bolts and allowing them to last longer. Also, get stronger aftermarket bolts if you replace them. don't buy OEM NIssan bolts.

here is what u need to do for the exhaust bolts. it always depends on the year of the car. i have an '83 280ZX, and i love it. the only problem i have right now is the bolts on thhe head. i have tried to replace on of them after it broke off, but it wasnt easy. u will need to take the intake off if it is a straight six. if it is straight then the intake and exhaust gasket are all the same, but that is all a given. if it is a V6, then still need to take off the intake just to have some working room. then u have to take off the heat sheild, if u have one on there or not. some Z's that i know dont have them, mine does! u will then probably need to drill the bolt out, but im telling u that it isnt fun.

I know, I have taken my exhaust and intake manifold off twice, labeling everything, etc. But I actually did not drill out the bold, I just took it down to gemini and had them do it, since I did not want to mess anything up.
