engine rebuild
engine rebuild
not sure if i have to do total rebuild or perhaps just re do the head,i expect a rebuild to beroughly1500 with parts...now my questions... who makes the best quality parts..i see many manufacturers out there....secondly,aside from polish/porting the head..any recommendations to mildly boosting the power? and is there a shift kit available for the trans? its a 1980 i believe N47 i hear they are basically bulletproof... any help out there is appreciated..thanks
Why are you not sure about this? What's wrong w/ the motor to warrant a head or complete motor rebuild?
Depends on which parts you buy / need...
Depends on which parts...
Please search, this topic has been discussed so much it's like beating a dead horse.

no but your rude and condescending.. depends is not a answer..just your favorite adult underwear...thanks but i do not need help from egotistical people.. figured there would be some encouragement here, not the case.
I wasn't rude, I was being frank / honest / open / helpful. You could have followed up on my questions & comments rather than become upset. Again, we are here to help. If you care to expand on your questions & concerns, they will be answered the best way possible.
Let's start with: What is wrong with the motor that would necessitate a rebuild?

ok MAYBE i am the bad one here,i will say this is not the first time you have sort of backhandedly slapped me down..maybe we can both try not to **** on each others cornflakes and maybe..i could learn something from people who already know..maybe... so lets try to play nice one more time...my engine 1980 runs like crap...i dont have to define crap do i? ok that was a joke.. tough to start, forever to run smooth..i still think stuck valve..but again, i dont know squat about these motors yet..
Have you read the spark plug tips? What color? Are all 6 the same? One look diff?
Compression check?
Checked the fuel pressure?
Spark on all 6?
When was the last tune up done?
I only ask these things because you must start w/ the basics to correctly diagnose problems.

when it runs..it does not backfire..but there is a distinct popping sound coming from the main throttle body.you can cruise it around, but has very little power. on the transmission..automatic... holding envelope up to my forehead, possibly my buttcheek doing my best carnac impersonation..auto-matic...that was a joke too,,dont stain my cornflakes fella.. i have heard 2 stories..the seller who says it shifts fine! and someone else who said it slips a little... i understand this automatic appears in many datsun cars. the only reason i want to keep it auto is it is 1 of 38 produced.the only way i can tell whats up is to bring it to my mechanic and ask him to do a diagnostic..on the good side..its been in side for about 4 months and i dont see one single drop of anyhing on the ground.. so to recap..its hard to start..it makes a sickening popping sound that you hear in the throttle body..runs smooth after awhile but is gutless... says 128,000 miles.i tend to believe it as my other one has 110,000 orig miles that i can document..ok this is as much as i know...i realize in "technical" terms this wont answer your questions on my question...now if i do rebuild the head is there any manufacturers you dont recommend? and dont say it depends okay..laughing..yeah buddy
i bought the car from a guy who said he was a mechanic..i shipped it here. i drove it about 5 miles and parked it.rolled it into my garage and gutted the interior.so i have not dug into the motor..but you can tell its sick..did not pull any plugs as i am in mid pulling the dahboard out.my space to work is very limited.i figured if it looks pretty inside it will give me more ambition to make it run like it should. i did check the distributor wires and there all correct..but the distributor shaft seems to be wobbly? probably needs replacing.. i have aback up one..not sure how good it is..theres no water in the oil, so i assume no cracked block..i want to keep it #matching.thats about all i can tell you at this point..extending my hand..sorry i get twisted up sometimes.. but i like straightforward...black and white
I suggest doing a compression check and tune up before you say it's a dead motor...
Sounds like a tune up would help. Also, it also sounds like you are leaning towards trans problems, not motor problems?
And I'm still not sure what's going on... you say you've only driven it 5 miles, and that was 4 months ago? Now you're ripping the interior out? I say take it one step at a time.

well i never said it was a dead motor..it does run..just no power .. and that popping sound i can hear in the throttle body...if you saw the interior you would understand why i ripped it out.. this car was in utah.. i guess before that in vegas area..and originally from washington state...odd how it returned home... ok heres the big clue...ever see PAWN stars? ever see the 280 zx 10 AE on there.. well thats mine now.. the guy who had it felt that interior resto meant duct tape... not even on the inside of the panel where you could not see it but outside,everywhere.. after i saw this car for the first time i was dissapointed..but the body is so solid its worth it.. after i bought it i told my buddy..he laughed and said did you know there is one of these just 15 miles up the road? i searched it out and bought it too..gold/black10AE 110,000orig miles..minor work needed..i will drive it in spring...
there was little to nothing salvagable on the interior..but i am a carpet away from complete inventory to re do it now...on another topic..how can you tell if the auto -environment system works? i have been told they need to be charged? it seems neither one works in both cars? oh well..
Ah... I did see that Pawn Stars episode. That 280zx sounded like crap.
You turn it on... if it works, it works. They are notorious for problems from vacuum leaks due to the 1.2million (slight exaggeration) vacuum lines. So if it only blows air on defrost, you have a vacuum or sensor problem. As for the "charging" you mentioned, that's for the A/C which requires R12 Freon (now illegal in the USA).
I say this in the nicest tone possible (no... I'm not being rude at all), feel free to search this topic as we've discussed it many times.
(Again, no rudeness... just being open), Are you doing all the head / machine work yourself? If you are going to take the head to a machine shop (as you should), they will source the best parts for your head and get them at a better price than you can. But... to answer your question, NISMO makes the best parts for your head.

If it was me I'd get the FSM from www.xenonS130.com and go through all the test for the EFI system. Check the resistance of the AFM, etc. I would eliminate all of the electronics and vacuum controlled stuff before I blamed the engine...
Engine rebuild or not
I'm missing something tOO. You're not alone and i can understand how Greg feels about the comments made even though he's new at this. I have seen this kind of stuff here before where the Professor have nothing to do so he gets up on the black board become condesending with his words such as we are here to help you. Help should be help but in this case the student who wants to learn is turned away and the Professor tends to seek refuge in his words. I strongly believe that the moderator should make rules to prevent this from happening. Simply give help and not looking for the next carcas to fly into. "May peace reign eternal"
I've never seen nismo be rude, maybe sarcastically condescending. But not legitimately. You guys are to sensitive. Like little girl lol. And he is the moderator. admin now I think. And that car wont lose value if uou switch to a manual trans. Also check timing and all vacuum hoses for leaks and all electrical connections under the hood and at the ecu
thanks, i will look into it..and yes this particular car would lose value its 1 of 38 automatics produced in the 10th AE series...the little girl.. wah laughing...my other 10th AE will become a 5 speed someday..
