I found a 83 Z with a good body, 109K, 5-speed, t-tops, new carpet and mats still in the box, needs clutch, a/c works, but the car would not start. I put plugs and plug wires in it and it fired up. But my problem is that the digital speedometer lights up but only reads 0. I looked on search but did not find anything. Are there any fuses, relays or speedometer parts that I can check myself ? Has anyone else had this problem? Any leads or suggestions would be helpful. I have stayed away from digital in my other 3 Z's, but the price was too good to pass up.

 

Digital speedos are a big pain when they break. Check the cable from the tranny and make sure it's good before you start tearing it up.

 

Yeah the cable is probably disconnected or damaged. If it's just sitting at zero then it's probably just not getting a signal.

 

Is this the same cable that controls the odometer? , because the odometer works, but I just don't get any reading on my speedometer, just says "O".
Where does the reading come from? or what can I check? Is there a gear behind the dash or something digital that needs replacing? Thanks!

 

There's actually some kind of infa-red sensor and wheel back there. I read a post somewhere awhile back on how to fix the 85mph limit on the disco dash.

If anyone has a link to that there's acutally a ton of info on the digital dash, how it works and what to look for if it breaks.
