Detuning the 280ZX

After 5 years of driving with this big 'performance' 60mm throttle body from Motorsport Auto, I decided to put the stock throttle body back on so I had smoother throttle control for traffic driving.

What a difference. Easier starts, much better cold engine running, more torque under partial throttle response. Feels like the same top end power. And of course, it is easier to control small amounts of throttle in slow traffic. I should never have changed the throttle body in the first place.

I never did the larger AFM conversion and I did not port the intake manifold so really the larger throttle body wasn't all that useful anyway. Those mods along with a bigger cam are what would let the 60mm throttle do its job. If you don't have all that, i say stick with the stock throttle.

One mod I did was to bypass the throttle heater. The coolant hose that runs to the top of the throttle body now goes past the throttle body so it will stay colder. I
ll have to see if the throttle body freezes up this winter or not.

Hey Bleach. I agree with you. Unless you plan to install all the complimentary upgrades, you can actually loose performance and driveability.

I'm holding onto the 60mm. I never know what toys I might own in the near future.

how do you do the larger afm converasion. I haven't heard about that. I'm going to get the larger throttle body and get my manifold ported.

Venemous, if you're seriously parting out your Zed, I would really like to call dibs on your fenders, airdam, and headlight buckets. I'll have to see what my financial situation is like in the close future, but those are really what I'm in need of. It'll be a small while though, got to see if I get a job soon.
