alternator trouble

ok, so this afternoon my friend calls from his job and ask me to bring him something that he had left at my house. when i got there i cut my car off and went inside, when i came out 2 min. later my car turned over once slowly
and went dead, i knew my + battery cable was falling apart so my friend took me to autozone. put the new batt. cable on and jumped it off and in ran for 30 sec. and died so i start checking the alternator, the belt was still attached so i started checking the wires on the alternator i saw one was attached but one was'nt. there's a yellow wire hanging down and it looks like the end is either burnt or broken, i couldn't tell because it was dark by that time. anyway can someone tell me where this wire goes, and if this sounds like the problem.

There is no yellow wire (not stock anyways) that goes to the Alternator. There is a blue wire that goes to the charge indicator lamp from the alternator. This wire must be plugged in. Without it the alternator will not charge the battery. Other than that there is the ground and the main White wires. If your battery cable was bad enough to where the battery wasn't charging then you could have ruined your alternator. Have it tested...It's free at autozone. If you've got a voltmeter you can check to see if it's putting out any voltage.

Other than that I cant tell you off the top of my head where that wire goes to.

your right, i went back and looked at it the next day and it was a off white
color wire, it just looked yellow in the dark. anyway the other end of the wire was still attached to the alternator so i reattached it and jumped the car off again but it still isn't charging. tommorow i'll get the alternator tested but i'm pretty sure it's toasted.
