79 280zx turbocharging
Just got a quick question. Can anybody tell me what sort of internal changes are needed to the engine when turbocharging the NA version of the 280zx? This is for a low boost, probably no higher than 5 psi. What I am refering to for internals is the valves, cam and such.

I would suppose that it'd be a lot easier and cheaper just to swap in a turbo motor. Motor's that aren't meant to be turbo'd don't do well turbo'd. You might want to post this in the 280zx section, this section is for Z32's or 300zx's. They'd be able to help you out more over there. good luck.

As emo said you could end up going a money route by not just doing a swap.
Back to your question -- from what I've read you wouldn't have to do anything internal for bolting on 5psi. That's kiddie food! Many motors can handle 7 to 9 psi bolted straight on. I think they started with 6 on the 350Z at Trust/GReddy. SE-Rs get 9 to 12 all the time. These two examples are much higher compression, too.

With 6-8psi on the L28 you'd be limited at 180-200hp. I figured if you swap to a turbo you want a faster car than a stock 280ZX turbo. Just put the real deal in there and max it out on boost! 12psi on the T3 turbo.

I´m gonna run 8.4:1 compression ratio on my turbo conversion, and that will give me approx. 185hp at 0.3 bar. This is with IC and a garret t04. pics: http://speedfreak.nu/modules.php?set...bum.php&page=1
