That's not true. If the boots are torn, and the system isn't leaking, you haven't got a problem, YET. If you leave the boots torn, you risk getting dirt and debris in the end of the rack at the inner tie rod ends. Eventually, this dirt & debris will eat the seals and you'll then have a problem. I'd suggest, just as a preventive measure, replace the torn boots. You'll avoid a VERY costly and time consuming repair in the future. Remember, to replace the rack & pinion, you'll either have to lift the motor or drop the crossmember, neither of which is a pleasant or quick fix.

On the subject of replacing the steering rack boots:

I ordered a pair of them online many months ago. I just now tried to install them and they are too small to fit over the steering rack. Way too small... stretching them will not work.

It is far too late to return these so I took one to Napa. They brought out their 280ZX rack boots and they are the same. Too small. So they double-checked the old book and it referenced the same part. $22 each boot and they won't fit.

So I go to Nissan. They can order them... $58 each boot!

Who has replaced their steering rack boots recently? I'm not paying $116 for a pair of rubber boots. These last ones I had on my car were replaced in 1999 and they are both torn now.

I got the part number from Nissan just FYI: 48203-N3400

I would take one of the old boots down to NAPA and see if they can match it up with something else. Probably going to wind up with a pair of boots for a Dodge Caravan or something...

I had the same prob. I just bought a universal set from AutoZone. I had to cut one end on each, to make them fit right, and then just zip tied them tight. The only prob, is that I couldn't use the vacuum tube that allows the air to move from one side to the other, so they collapse a lil when it turns.

Universal is the way to go if you're looking for affordability. As long as they are well sealed, I don't think a 'little' vacuum in the boot is too much of a bad thing.

Any additional commnets?

Nissan rack boots from Courtesy Nissan in TX are 40.00 each.
Still 80 bucks plus shipping....
But they will fit and probably come with the good metal clamps and not a couple of cheap zip ties.
