Special tools for rebuilding calipers
Special tools for rebuilding calipers
After having to rebuild my rebuilt caliper, I was wondering if there is a list of special tools that are needed? I had to make a few with what I had lying around in the garage.
The rebuilt cali that I bought for the rear of my '83 blew the seal at the parking brake lever and was spewing fluid all over the garage floor. (Nasty Mess) The boner that rebuilt the cali put the retaining clips in wrong.
There is a smaller one that goes in first then a larger one that holds the spring in. Luckily I had an extra caliper for the core so I could tear it apart and replace the broken piston, o-ring for the piston and the trashed retaining clip.
Any info on specialty tools would be kewl!

Vice grips, c-clamps (fronts only), a flathead screwdriver, and gloves... those are about all the needed tools. If you want, you can buy a retainer clip removal tool.... but two nails will do the same thing (just a lil more "dangerous").
I found those clips are in there pretty deep but I managed to get them out. Getting the big one in that holds the spring has been a challenge. What do you use to compress the spring then install the retainer? I had to make a "special tool" to keep the spring in place while attempting to install the retainer.
