280zx rear shocks replacement

Hi,

I am about to replace the rear shocks with Tocickos HP. I've been reading on the proper way to replace them, and it seems to me that I really do NOT need to compress the springs, I can just lift the rear end of my z to release the compression on the springs, then unscrew the top washer and the threee bolts in the rear tower inside the car, then unolt the one bolt at the bottom of the shock that connects it to the suspension arm. Is that correct or am I using the wrong approach?

Thanks

I dropped the entire assembly off my rear suspension without compressing anything. To get the shock out from the assembly, however, you would more than likely need to compress the spring before removing any bolts.

Hope this helps -
Dave

No need to compress them to remove the assembly, but once off you will need to compress spring to swap the strut. You can rempve the nut without compressing but it is under pressure and theres always a danger factor there. Then you have to compress it to get the nut back on the new strut. Try your local parts house and see if they loan or rent a spring compresser, makes things much easier and safer to boot......

If you are using lowering springs there is no need to compress the new spring. It will not be under pressure until the weight of the car is on it. If you are using the stock springs, you will need to get the spring compress to put the assembly back together. I would suggest just taking it down to your local mechanic, they will have a compressor.
