If you're going to replace the whole dash then you dont need the metal frame. It's easier to just swap the dash and frame as an entire assembly. It's only like 7-8 bolts when you do it that way.

Definitely change the thermostat and get a Nissan one. The cheap crap from the auto parts store is questionable at best and a real Nissan one is like $10.

Go to black. It just looks damn good. Of course, I didn't realize I was following in Rod's footsteps when I went black w/red trim on my interior!

I also have red trim on my engine bay with 350Z Pike's Peak white exterior paint.

Of course, there's not much red in it right now...

Man, I didn't realize how many others also had a red/black interior. I changed the interior of my old NA to be all red (except the black seats). But since my turbo's original interior was black and in good condition, I'm leaving most of it black but just changing the carpet to red (though I guess it's not really the "trim" that's red in that case).

According to another member (Bleach I think it was) the dash caps actually fit and look good.

You are correct in assuming that it is simply a plastic cover that goes over your original dash to cover any cracks or other damage or fading.

It doesn't matter what size the cracks are. But if the distortion of your dash is too bad then the cap may have a tough time fitting over and holding it's shape. My previous dash was really bad. It had large splits all the way down and was so bad that it couldn't even hold it's shape. It had bulges and things like that. My newer dash has a couple of small cracks but the dash isn't distorted at all. So a cap would fit right on it. I'm sure distortion has a big part to do with why these things dont always fit right

If there's distortions where the edges of a crack begin curling upwards, you can always dremel them flat.

I have a cap on my 240z dash. The two cracks are of moderate size and I only got a 'half' cap. They are polymer plastic and really do cover and look decent. I've had a few people drop their jaws when they see it thinking it's an original uncracked dash, but on closer examination, it's just a plastic cap. It'll get me through until I get my 'spare' dash back from restoration.

Yeah see mine was so bad that when I removed it and then tried to put it back in I couldn't get to go back properly cause it was so far gone. I mean it wasn't just cracks. It had splits that ran from the front all the way back. Basically the padding part of the dash was in several pieces. Some of the cracks were up to 2" wide (and I'm not talking long here. Length was front to back). It was horrible.
