Angry Bad Gas

I receidently purchased a 83 280ZX which had been sitting for about 3 yrs. Well I did a dumb thing. After putting a battery in the car I tried to start it, and it started. I should have quit while ahead, but no I started it 3 times more, and now I have the cruddy gas in the system. I have dropped the gas tank & cleaned it. I will also replace the fuel filter, but does anyone have a quick solution on cleaning the injectors, or any other suggestions to flush out the whole system (without taking it to the shop)?

If the injectors arent completely gunked up you can run fuel system cleaner through the fuel system. Get a good brand and not the cheapo stuff. There are other old school concoctions you can run through the system but I'm not keen on any off the top of my head. As long as the filter was in place you should be alright. Just purge the system with a fresh filter at the very least and that'll get all the old gas flushed out. The best way to do this is to fill a bucket with gas and feed the fuel pump from the bucket and let the return line drain into another bucket. Once you can see that no more gunk or discolored gasoline is coming through you know the system is completely purged. The left over clean gas can be put into your freshly cleaned gas tank too. You can also pull the rail and hoses and blow compressed air through them or use a rifle bore brush to clean them out to make sure they're not gunked up if you think you need to.

Oh and one more thing. If the gas was just stale then you don't need to flush it the way I described. That's more so for if you found a lot of rust in the system or anything like that. That'd be a waste of gas if you don't need to do it.

Especially considering the raising gas prices! And as for the cleaner. I found that Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner worked really great on my Celica. It cleaned it out real good. So I am sure it will do wonders in a Z!

I was listening to the radio today and they were talking about gas prices around the country. I though I had it bad at $2.99 a gallon. They said parts of Chicago are at something like $3.70/gall. And in Atlanta prices hit over $6.00/gall!!!!!! How F-N rediculous is that?!?!

$2.99 here for regular grade. (87 octane) And yes it is friggin' ridiculous, but not much we can do about it. Which sucks also!

no kidding. I've been thinking about it. It might come down to that. If you want transporation, you might not be able to use gas powered vehicles in a year or so. When will it end? Can we afford $4.00 a gallon here? people used to say they would stop driving at $2.00 a gallon. I still see those V8's on the road everywhere while I choose to drive my Datsun truck more often. 27mpg isn't going to be enough though.

Got someone I know who works at the tar sands in Northern Alberta...They're just lovin this situation. In terms of wages i.e, because they still get to pay the same as us for pump gas but make well over $150,000 working regular hours. Mind you they work very hard and its a messy job.....I have tried but I cant hear any complaining, freakin global trends! Just imagine, that Bentley in Mr Earl Van Whatsisname's garage will be a museum piece in the not to diistant future.

Kinda interesting that the car manufacturers are pumping out these big HP cars seemingly with increasing rapidity, mind you they are more economical then similar cars of the yesteryears but still when you hit that gas pedal that Hemi is a far cry from the four banger it is claimed to be while "routine driving conditions"...I guess that "sell em while you can" plan is a go!

.....sooooo anyone wanna gingerly race to the propane conversion kit store? or CNG? or what about that Corn based alcohol stuff...

It really doesn't matter what the cost goes up to, we are screwed since the Z's need high test for them to run efficiently. I guess we will have to limit our Z driving. Oh, here in Texas it's about $2.75 for regular.
