who said you can't customize a ZX?
I own a 79 ZX that I think has been customized, meaning I have built it to suit me.
Right after I bought the car I bought a ground effects kit from MSA, including front air dam and side skirts. I removed the front and rear bumpers, which I think were, lets not say unattractive, but maybe obtrusive. I shaved all the trim from the car, including emblems, side markers, and chrome. I shaved the door handles and installed remote electric openers with door poppers. I frenched the power antenae. I grafted front turn signals with "ZX" script into the air dam. I installed blue dots into the rear lights.
Inside I built a custom console that houses a 10-disc cd changer and even has the "missing cup holders". I removed the power window controls from each door and installed a single controller in the console. While I was playing around there I decided to move the power rear view mirror controls to the dash, and I installed the drivers control where the cigarette lighter was and the passenger control where the speaker control joy stick was.
You gotta have sounds, and I'm from the old school motto, "if it's too loud, you're too old". I built a box that sets between the rear strut towers that houses (2) 12" woofers and (2) 3-1/2" tweeters. Below the box in the storage bin area, I mounted (2) 6-1/2" mid-range speakers and in the Molding that houses the retractable seat belt I mounted (2) 1" tweeters where the plug used to be. I have a 4-channel 1000 watt amp mounted on the back of the speaker box that is accessible from the hatch.
I recarpeted the entire car in grey including the headliner, where I removed the dome light and rear view mirror. I installed a newer mirror on the windshield.
I went from a blue interior scheme to grey and black.
The exterior color went from silver to metallic saphire blue. I installed some cheap custom wheels and new tires.
I had to replace the original exhaust, and I eliminated the cat and went with 2-1/2" pipe (and no I didn't exit on the passenger side). I haven't installed headers yet, and I may not. Rather than installing a cold air intake with KN cone filter, I swiss cheesed the original box with as many 3/4" holes as would go around it.
I'm definitely not finished yet, and I consider MY car a work in progress. I get a lot of my ideas from this forum, which I think has the best informed members of any site. I enjoy hearing about other Zdriver's adventures, and if I can help I will.

Definitely post some pics, scan 'em if you hafta, I'm really interested in seeing some of your mods and how the color scheme turned out. My '82 is was, apparently, kind of a pewter/silver looking color with red interior, but I've seriously thought about changing it, plus, has the intake mod helped or can you tell?
