Re: Turbo

How turbochargers work

How transmissions work

How differentials work

TO answer your questions,
<blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr>

I wanted to know if the 83 300ZX turbo would fit on my 77 280Z?

<hr></blockquote>
no, because there is no such thing as an 83 300zx turbo. A 300zx turbo also wouldn't fit because....
how v engines differ from inline engines

<blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr>

If it does fit how will it help me?

<hr></blockquote>
if it does (but it won't), yes.
<blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr>

My Z has everything stock.I only have a 4 speed tranny only?

<hr></blockquote>
Then you'll top out about 120mph, due to your car's aerodynamic drag coefficient rising to .46 at 100mph, that is, assuming you don't start lifting and flip, since a stock 1st gen Z car produces 100lbs of lift at 80 mph or so
<blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr>

Will the turbo just pick me up faster or will it also give me a higher max speed?

<hr></blockquote>
See the above links on how gearing and turbochargers work.

Re: Turbo

The Engine out of a 300ZX ( VG30DET) would fit with
modifications and some fabrication work. How it will
help you depends on way to many factors for us to list here.
check out ZR8ED's 280Z with a VG30 turbo in it, and see
how much he sank into the car to make it work.

Re: Turbo

Mexican Z Racer said that he wanted to use the Turbo from a 300ZX on his 77 280Z. (or maybe it really is from an 83, and he just got the car's name wrong) From the sounds of his post, he wanted to just slap a turbo charger on the side of his stock engine; not do an engine swap. Auxillary is right on target. The turbo might be a close fit for the exhaust manifold of a 280zx turbo, but a 300ZX exhaust manifold is no where close to the configuration you need to go on a stright six. You will need to stick with a 280ZX turbo engine for doing your "turbo" swaps. But, you should know that swapping just a turbo is not a good way to do it. Go ahead and do a full engine swap. Either a 280zx turbo engine or use the complete VG30 turbo engine/transmission from a 300ZX. The 300zx swap will be a lot more work.

Boosted, don't be so hard on people. The original question was not all that clear. Do you have a 1983 300ZX Turbo?

Re: Turbo

thanks for the warm reply. I would really appreciate it if you would reread the original post, and then my reply. I'll help you out (I didn't feel like linking you to hookedonphonics.com)

V6 block - 2 exhaust manifolds dumping into a single wastegate for the turbo. Last I checked, you can't slap 2 v6 manifolds and wastegate onto an L series block. one could make a custom wastegate and manifold for the 280Z, but that's not "direct fitting". He also specified swapping turbo only, not the turbo AND motor.

will the stock motor and computer be able to handle the boost? stock internals? how about the fuel pressure which needs to be adjusted in turn so the system's not running leaned out? How about injectors to provide the flow?

Re: Turbo

Auxilary,
Granted he didn't give enough information to warrant
a detailed reply, but the way you answered his question
wasn't the best way to handle it.

I don't mind a little fun here and there , but when you guys attack
each other ..( Not Just Auxilary !!!) then nothing gets solved and
we have a stupid flame war. Lets stick to the facts and try to help each other out.

Did any of you guys PM the guy to let him know you needed
more facts ???? And not a PM with some of the questions
I am seen lately.
