Those Little Vents
Well this may seem a stupid thing to ask but.... I really wanna know what those vents in the rear hatch of the early 69-70' model 240z's is for???? I can't possible think of what they could do. I personally own a 73' and If I was gonna buy a 240z again I'd get a 73 but I'm still happy with what I got. Were those vents replaced by the C-pillar badge with the vent behind it???
Doesn't really matter I guess just wondering...

I used to have a '78, and I remember reading something about the air conditioning exhausting through the vent holes behind the "Z" emblems rear from the side windows... then I noticed that the '71 that I have now... doesnt have such vent holes, but has (actually had) the vents on the hatch... so I'm sure you can add 2+2...
I filled those holes and painted over... they arent there now... oh well... that was before i realized what function they would serve..

Here's my 2 cents. I believe the vents are to help relieve any pressure created when closing the doors or hatch. When the car was new it's seal most likely kept the car relatively air tight. The vents release the air pressure.
...this came to me after looking at a Conquest TSI. I commented on the vents and the owner gave me that explanation. He demonstrated by opening and closing one of the doors. You could feel a small rush of air as the door was sealed shut. BTW, the TSI was some ride. Turbo charged four banger with shift points at 7,500rpm!!!

They're for ventilation. The little opening facing the rear actually catches air by vacuum and brings it into the car. I'm not making that up believe it or not...

Perceptions become our reality. The vents on the hatch of the early 240s were just that, vents. When you open the floor vents in the cockpit, or turn on the fan where does the excess air go....after all you are pressurizing the cabin....it escapes through the vents in the hatch....alla Nissan Flow Thru Ventilation Sys. The later models had the vents moved to the C-pillar. Seems the early vents may have caused exhaust fumes problems....see there is a 1 way flapper valve in the hatch trim on the inside...and it did not always seal up good, so when you cracked a window, which creates a neg pressure venturi effect, it would suck exhaust fumes into the cabin. How do I know all this, I have the early sys, and love it. Why you ask....the early cars weighed about 100lbs less than the later ones, and the car has a better drag coeffient. BTW, inside the hatch and under the holes for the vents, there were plastic trays that would catch water runoff and route it out the hatch thru the holes in the bottom, ya know the ones with the rubber plugs in them on the older Zs....Anyway just my $.02
