Here's my 2 cents. I believe the vents are to help relieve any pressure created when closing the doors or hatch. When the car was new it's seal most likely kept the car relatively air tight. The vents release the air pressure.
...this came to me after looking at a Conquest TSI. I commented on the vents and the owner gave me that explanation. He demonstrated by opening and closing one of the doors. You could feel a small rush of air as the door was sealed shut. BTW, the TSI was some ride. Turbo charged four banger with shift points at 7,500rpm!!!

They're for ventilation. The little opening facing the rear actually catches air by vacuum and brings it into the car. I'm not making that up believe it or not...
