speed-O-meter...
speed-O-meter...
Hey this might sound like a dumb question but I gotta ask it 'cause I dunno the answer.
Will the 160mph speedometer from a 240 fit and work properly in a 280zx? God, I hope so!
Thanks for putting up with my stupidity.

Kel,
No its not a bolt in swap. I'm sure you can make it fit if you try hard. Now there is a 140mph speedo for the 280ZX's. Are you planning on going to 160
?! hehehe
Anyways on the later 280ZX's all of them came with 85mph speedos. When I had my 81 280ZX i would usually hit 85mph and higher but tach went up to 85mph. Now if you find a 79 or 80 280ZX they have the 140mph tach and that should be the answer to your tach problemo.
Good luck!

Re: speed-O-meter...
OK, well does anybody have the 140mph speedo and want to sell it?? I don't have my analog cluster yet, so if anybody has the whole thing, then I would be interested. There are quite a few analogs on eBay right now, but no 140s. I thought I might be able to get one with the 85mph and put that 160mph in from the 240. But if won't fit properly, I'm not gonna try.
Thanks for the info!

Re: speed-O-meter...
The simple think to do is run an ad on this forum and Zcar.com for a 130 mph speedo from a 1979 model. That is what I did and I got FIVE responses. I picked one from AZ -- totally painless. When I got it, I sent it to Ft, Lauderdale speedo for cleaning and recalib. -- since I didn't want to do this twice. The odometer on the 79' is a 5 digit, and my 1980 is a 6 digit, which I wanted to keep. Ft Lauderdale speedo fixed me up -- they put the 6 digit odometer into the 130 moh housing -- even had my original mileage put on odometer

Re: speed-O-meter...
The whole deal was less than MSA charges for their stuff. BTW, I originally ordered from MSA and they had me send my old one in. I did and waited 6 months, finally said send it back -- they did -- broken.
Seems like the speedo was $35, the rework was $125

Re: speed-O-meter...
Here is a funny trick to make your existing speedo go higher. Remove the trip-o-meter reset button. Then your needle will keep traveling around in a circle when you go faster. You can make small marks where each 10mph point is or make up a new face with higher numbers and print it out on a label sheet. Cover the sheet in a clear stickon piece to make it last longer and look better. The speedometer is still accurate as it continues around a full 360 degrees.
