Re: rearends

Take a look at this site ... www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/ they list
what has what . It might not be totally accurate. I will see if I can find pics of
each type rear end and post them.

Re: rearends

I think that Spudz is right, that Z Design studio is not accurate on what has a R180 or R200. The gear ratios seem a litte off too. The 280zx never had a 3.36 in the US.

From what I know, I would say that both manual and automatics 1979 280zxs come stock with an R180 3.54 rear end. Then in 1981 They changed to the R200 3.9 rear. But you never know if your car has had parts swapped out.

Re: rearends

A/T ZXT's have a 3.54 rearend that's a R200. Not sure of any other models. I thought the non turbo ZX's had an R180 with a 3.70 or 3.90 rearend. The 200's came in the turbo with a 3.70 right? Or maybe I'm just mistaken.

Ok, looks like some of what I said was right. The 1979 comes with many different options. It may depend on what country of North America the car was sold in. But here is a web page I found. I looked it over and it seems to be pretty accurate from what I have learned, so I would trust all the content to be correct.

If you don't know the gear ratio of your car, you can do a test to find out what it is. Jack up one side of the rear and leave the other rear wheel on the ground. Make sure the car is in neutral. Position the wheel that is in the air at a certain point. Example: put the air valve close to the front or back edge of the fender. Mark a spot on the driveshaft with some whiteout or white paint so it is easy to see. Then turn the wheel around exactly one turn. The driveshaft should turn 3.5, 3.9, or maybe 4.1 times. If you can't see the mark on the final turn, then your R200 is probbly a 3.54. If it almost makes the final turn then it is a 3.9 (not quite four revolutions) but if it looks like it just made the four revolution or just past it, then its a 4.11:1 rear end.
