Hi, I'm trying to determine if my oil pressure gauge reads normally or is on its way out. It reads normal to low pressure while I am driving (1978 Datsun 280Z) but goes below zero on the highway. It promptly jumps up to about normal when I exit off the highway. Ideas?

Hook up another oil pressure gauge to see if the one in your car is working correctly. Use a mechanical pressure gauge that you know is correct. Go from there.

The pressure reading should be approximately 60 while running on the highway at higher rpms. Idle the pressure drops to the 20-30 range. Sounds like you have a bad sender unit, or a dirty one at least.
