R31 rear struts
Hey ppls,
The other aussies here would have the best clue im sure about if this swap is possible.
Instead of pulling the R31 rear discs and putting them on the Z, why not pull the whole R31 strut assembly in, that way you get the discs with the mounting points, and you can use CV shafts (with a bit of modding). Is this possible or practical at all ?

Re: R31 rear struts
OK, here's the deal:
Australian made/delivered R31's (EXCEPT the GTS Series 1 & 2) have a Borg-Warner live axle in them. This is the donor of the discs/calipers that a lot of Datsun owners use (I've actually used the discs from the U12 Pintara/Bluebird/Corsair, as they fit slightly better). Somehow, I don't see this rear-end being fitted to a Z as a whole.
Japanese IRS R31's have the same rear suspension design as the 280ZX, 300ZX(Z31), 910 Bluebird & R30 Skyline. You MIGHT be able to fit the R31 rear arms/brakes into the 280ZX, but why bother? As for fitting them to a 300ZX, they are already the same. If you look at pad requirements for the IRS R31 rear, they are the same as all models listed above & the S13 Silvia/180SX.
As an aside to this, the front brakes on the IRS R31 GTS's (ie turbos & and the Aussie GTS 1 & 2's, ie 140kW RB30E) are also the same as the DR30, Z31 Turbo & S13 Turbo.
I hope this helps.
