u don't i;ve done it with the engine bolted in, just need a little bit of manuvaring...
the manual says it cause it is really easy to get out once u lifted it up 1 inche or so... if u can't be bothred don't worry.. if u can be do it its easyier... espcially to clean the bottom of the block for prepping for the new gasket

i replaced the oil pan gasket on my 78 280 w/o pulling the motor. it takes some maneuvering, but it can be done. plan on knocking your knuckles alot !!
