My Z is a stock 1982 Turbo. Here in Phoenix during the very hot summers can I use regular unleaded gas with out an intercooler? Also has anyone installed or used a J&S Electronics "SafeGuard" engine knock controller? I just bought my Z this winter. I love these cars, and would be thankful for any help or information. The rule is to just listen for pinging. If you want to run low octain fuel with no intercooler, then make sure your boost is at stock levels or below. Don't drive too hard. If you want more power and better performance then you will probably need high octain fuel.

The 1982 Turbo engine has a knock sensor already wired into the EFI harness.
It works quite well ........so save the dollars.
Your stuck using Premium, and I suggest Chevron. The 1982 Turbo is designed for a MINIMUM octane rating of 92, that leaves out the lower grade fuels. But then you don't need to purchase additives so the price is actually better from the pump
In a jam you can retard the timing slighty to help adjust for poor gasoline, but you will loose performance and your Z won't like you.

You'll have more problems with your brake fluid during the summers in Phoenix than gasoline. I'd switch the brake system over to a type 5 fluid to prevent boil out and make darn sure the heat shield protecting the master cylinder is in place.
On a summer rally from El Paso to Santa Fe I pushed a turbo Z hard and by the time I reached Santa Fe I didn't have any brake! And was I surprised!
Your turbo can get brutally hot if pushed, and the heat will shorten the life of the turbo , if you think gasoline is expensive, price out a new turbo.

you can pick up a cheap volvo intercooler on ebay for about 50 bucks, and dump some octane booster into your tank to be on the safe side. I'd suggest doing the volvo IC deal because you can set up the whole thing with piping for about 100 bucks

If you use a high grade fuel you don't need the additives!
A intercooler is a great piece of equipment just be sure you know how to adjust the fuel ratios after changing from stock.
Any turbo in the southwest needs to be walked down to cool before shutting off the engine, that is the most common cause of failure I have seen.
