Re: New 260Z driver
ok you should take it to a mechanic and ask for the points to be replaced if you do not know what they are
points time the spark that is delt out to the cylinders
a rotor button is like a switch as to when each cylinder gets its spark and spins around inside the distributor
dizzy cap is the black plastic top of the distributor that the spark leads go into
and no u should need to spray anything in the carbs .. i think you will find that points will help this a lot
is the battery going flat ?

One suggestion that I would have is go to your local bookstore or parts store and buy a Chilton or Haynes manual for your make and model car. This will help tremendously and is worth the 15 bucks or so.

The amp gauge won't tell you the charge in your battery, it only tells you if the alternator is supplying current, or if something is draining current. You need a voltmeter to check the battery- best to get an auto electrician who can check for dead cells etc

A "dizzy cap" is called a "distributor cap" in the US. You can buy one at any auto part store. It included the button inside the cap. Also, a new rotor (whcih attaches inside the cap) would be a good purchace. The points are located below the rotor and cap. They are fairly easy to install, but you should buy a manual before doing so.
Also, check the timing (requires a timing light). If you replace the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points, time the engine, change the oil, and replace both the oil and air filters you should find that you will not need to use spray to start the car. If you do th work yourself the cost will be about $80 in parts (plus tools).
Lastly, before you paint the car, spend money making sure it runs. A smooth running car is better than a nice looking car that will not leave your driveway.

Re: New 260Z driver
haha yeah, i will need to get this darn thing started. How am i able to time the sparks? And what kind of spark plugs would you prefer. I am planing to use this car for driving streets, and alittle racing. Do you guys think i should keep the stock engine, or should i go for a swap. I do not know how to tune a carb. Will this be a problem later on? sohuld i find a engine that uses electric fuel injectors and ect?.

If you don't know what points are, and you've never set the timing on a car, don't even consider replacing the engine unless you pay someone to do it. Get a Haynes manual and read about how an engine works and learn to fix the one that you have.

Re: New 260Z driver
If you want to go faster get a milder cam shaft that will make a big difference .. the engine swap depends on how fast you want ot go really, the spark plugs to use are NGK BPR6ES's they are a really good plug. In australia you can get electornic dizzies out of early L24 and L28 Skylines with EFI, they make a big difference. If you want to tune the car yourself and save money (you'll have to tune the carbs etc if you get a cam) take it to someone and watch how they do it and play around with it yourself ... you may stuff it up a few times and have to take it back but its all about experience ... remember where you're initial settings where so you can restore them. the carb mixture screws are round **** under the carbs ... screw them up for lean down for rich ... but find some more out before you attempt anything

Re: New 260Z driver
I dont know if this is a correct question, or this just make no sense at all.
Are skylines carb's a direct bolt on. Because my 260Z dosen't not have a EFI correct, So if i were to get a EFI i would not haft to bother with the carb's?
My purpose for posting on this fourm is to learn. Please dont start to flame on my questions.

Re: New 260Z driver
True, you could change over to EFI. If you want, a good swap would be a 280zx turbo engine. Since you mentioned a turbo and modifying your current engine...
Swapping in a complete 280ZX turbo engine with all associated wiring would be the best way to do it. It is actually something you could do mostly yourself. Experiecned people do that because it works out better in the long run than modifying a non-turbo engine. You will then have upgraded from a 2.6L engine to a 2.8L, gotten rid of the carbs and put in Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI), and got the turbo in. From there, you can get it tuned up good and upgrade turbo parts if you find time and money. You'll be pretty fast at that point anyway.

Here is a 260Z with a stock 280ZX turbo engine installed. I saw this one a few years ago in Canada.

Re: New 260Z driver
you need the computer (after market one would be better though), wiring loom, fuel pump, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, fuel rail, air flow meter and all the vacuume stuff. also after about 200RWHP the head will lift off the block so you may need to invest in some better head bolts.
I personally prefer the smaller capacity engines as they rev better and when you run more boost it makes the engine rev more ... but thats just personal oppinion
AlanZ you just put the whole skyline assembly in afaik.

Re: New 260Z driver
The 280ZX turbo does have different head bolts than a non-turbo. I have not heard of anyone changing those except for 300hp+ applications. By then you have to change your headgasket and pistsons/rings ect anyway. 250-300hp is feasable using the good old Nissan turbo block and head.
$$$ A 280ZX turbo engine complete... depends on how much the owner wants! sometimes as low as $200 for a bare engine with no wiring. Usually $400 to $550 for a complete engine. I have even seen a complete wrecked turbo ZX for $500 to $700. That would be a good route to go. Do your tune-ups and get it running good inside the 280zx. Then tranfser the engine so that you know for sure it was all running and hooked up properly beforehand.

Re: New 260Z driver
how difficult is the wiring. And also can i transfer any parts from the 260Z engine to a 280z engine.
i mean parts that would be useful, or if i were to buy a 280z engine, should i just sell the 260z engine the way it is?
and my last question, how much would i be able to sell a 260z engine for.

Re: New 260Z driver
if your serious about racing get the cobra jet Ford 302, its lighter then the stock engine at has a whole lot more power, of course this isnt an easy mod, here is a pic of a z with one in it.
