True, you could change over to EFI. If you want, a good swap would be a 280zx turbo engine. Since you mentioned a turbo and modifying your current engine...

Swapping in a complete 280ZX turbo engine with all associated wiring would be the best way to do it. It is actually something you could do mostly yourself. Experiecned people do that because it works out better in the long run than modifying a non-turbo engine. You will then have upgraded from a 2.6L engine to a 2.8L, gotten rid of the carbs and put in Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI), and got the turbo in. From there, you can get it tuned up good and upgrade turbo parts if you find time and money. You'll be pretty fast at that point anyway.

Here is a 260Z with a stock 280ZX turbo engine installed. I saw this one a few years ago in Canada.

Re: New 260Z driver

The 280ZX turbo does have different head bolts than a non-turbo. I have not heard of anyone changing those except for 300hp+ applications. By then you have to change your headgasket and pistsons/rings ect anyway. 250-300hp is feasable using the good old Nissan turbo block and head.

$$$ A 280ZX turbo engine complete... depends on how much the owner wants! sometimes as low as $200 for a bare engine with no wiring. Usually $400 to $550 for a complete engine. I have even seen a complete wrecked turbo ZX for $500 to $700. That would be a good route to go. Do your tune-ups and get it running good inside the 280zx. Then tranfser the engine so that you know for sure it was all running and hooked up properly beforehand.
