Emmisions on my 73
Well I ran my 73 though emmisions and failed misrably the first time (my car has no smog equiptment installed). So for the second go round I Tuned my SU's and replaced plugs and wires. Then I added 90%+ Alcohol and ran her though emmisions and passed the loaded but failed the idle (very close though) . My idle sticks a little high after having run for a while should I have told the lady doing the test to rev it up before doing the idle test to kick my idle down? Any Ideas on what I can do to pass the idle test?
Thanks

What I really want to know is where you live so that I do not have to get my 70 smogged. All cars over 25 yrs old are not required to meet federal emmissions standards, and over 22 for DOT regulations. Anyway try lubing all of your carb linkages and install a helper spring...that should bring the idle down, also set the timing to factory settings..ie 5deg bdc @ 750rpm

Re: Emmisions on my 73
I live in CA and every car '73 and older is exempt from smog inspection. Which is why I bought my '71. I built it after it had been sitting for 10 years, and after paying the DMV penalty fees (which was more then the cost of the car!!), I just showed proof of insurance and there were my tags! At the time actually, the engine wasnt even all together. The head was sitting in the garage..

Re: Emmisions on my 73
I live in Phoenix, AZ because we have had so many clean air violations from the federal govement over the years because of or (previously) laxed emmisons policys now all cars have to go through emmisons. 75 and below have eaiser tests than 76-79 and 80 to new. They just want the cars to meet or exceed the orginal smog output required at that time and 75 and below (thank goodness) don't have a under hood inspection but all the newer ones do (but then 75 and below have to come in every year not every other year like the newer cars)
My 73 has a modified head, racing (non-smog-leagal) intake, crane ignition, and many more mods. She won't pass on gas alone I have to add alcohol. I've gone through three times (with a total of over three galons of alcohol and an octane booster) now and failed each time (but gotten better each time) I have passed the load test 2 times but failed my idle (last time just bearly). I've fine tuned the carbs and replaced the plugs and wires and I've been tweeaking the carb settings each time I go through (I'm going to have to re calibrate the carbs when I finaly pass so it will run good on gas again)

Re: Emmisions on my 73
Ok I do understand that are states that exceed the federal regulations....but if you timing is advanced beyond the stock settings, you WILL have excesive HC emmisions at idle...you said that they have someone else drive the car?...anyway..try setting the timing closer to factory specs...and what kind of carbs are you running....Tri Webers or SU.....realy does not matter....forget the alcohol and find the jetting and mixture settings that the car needs to run at to pass...I would like to know more about your specific engine setup...ie cam timing carbs...then we can figure out why you are failing
