auto or manual trans??
hey everyone, i dont know that much when it comes to the transmission so i was wondering about auto and manual. i have a 1977 280Z with a redone engine, i currently have the stock 4 speed manual in it that is no good. i need to change my trans but i was wondering, wut should i go with for a better preformance? i have heard many things from both sides, good and bad, but how do they compare to one another?? does a auto accelerate faster but have low top speed or the other way around, i dunno.
any input would be great, thanks

Guess it all depends on what you want to do with your car. The a/t is okay if you're going turbo or doing some serious n/a motor work, but you'll have to get a higher stall and stuff like that. The a/t is more consistent with shifts and the initial shock on the driveline at the start of a race is greatly reduced when compared to dumping the clutch on a manual. A good example of an a/t car would be SCC's CRX they're working on. Or some of those high powered domestics. Anyway a manual is much more fun as you have control over what gear you want to be in and if you're really good at shifting you can keep up with an a/t. Besides for street cars on the whole, the manual would probably be better anyway as it has more gears to accelerate with and has the o/d unlike the 3spd a/t in a ZXT. For a streetable car a manual would be the ticket in my opinion. I can't wait to switch my a/t either and improve the gas mileage. Oh and Ecology has a bunch of m/t for a Z there so you won't have any problems finding one. The a/t is a little more rare.

Re: auto or manual trans??
A manual gives you many more driving abilities over an a/t. If you need a 5 speed i have one out of a 79 collecting dust in my garage, Or you could go to a junk yard find a 77-79 Datsun pickup with a 5 speed 4 cylinder combo. These work great in a Z i had one in my 70Z.
Now if all you want to do is just cruise around and never use the Z for what is was made for get the a/t but i gaurantee you will totally hate yourself later. I have owned 13 Z,s in the past 20 years and only one was an a/t I gave it to a friend cause i hated it so much.
Thats just my opinion
Gotta get my Z's

Re: auto or manual trans??
any one who says auto is better is a fukin jakass i smoked a 2001 prelude with intake headers and exhaust, by 2 car lengths i have an 80 280zx stock can u pssibly figure out y because it was a fukin auto. my friend owns it, it is a piece of [censored] manual has better trottle response better ecceleration and better top speed i am sick and tired of people trying to convince other people that auto is faster because there jack *** cant drive a stick. why dont drag racers use auto if it is so much faster?????
AUTO can eat a dick
p.s. not like my oppinion counts i think u should do what ever u want with ur car. have fun and never take things too seriously.
imports 4 life
p.s. cant touch the skyline

Re: auto or manual trans??
Who cares if a Buick V8 or V6 turbo can beat a stock 280ZX? A buick is a butt ugly car! You might as well be driving a garbage truck with a 8.0L V10
Gearing makes a huge difference in acceleration. If that same Buick had a 5-speed, it would waste another Buick with an automatic assuming both have the same engine.
Ya, a 2001 Corvette with an auto can beat most Zs with a manual. That's not the point.

Re: auto or manual trans??
Alright, just to settle the argument, IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE DRIVER. I've driven and raced both tranny types, each has advantages and disadvantages, but when it comes to racing the car only counts for about 45% of the equation (if even that much) most of it is the driver. Bull!@#$ you say? Here's an example or two. I owned a 1978 T-Bird with a 3sp. a/t, minimal engine mods (had it to about 370 hp) 351 V-8, 7500+ lbs. Stomped the crap outta a '87 corvette with a manual in a 1/4 mile drag. Also stomped the crap outta a '85 300zxt in a 30 mile top end race, both were manual tranny. Also lost races to: Toyota Supra, '81 280 ZX n/a, and quite a few others. The deciding factor in picking a tranny is whatever you're comfortable with. Personal preference for me is a 5sp. because I like the feel and the control over shifting, and the better fuel economy over a 3sp. auto. Just go with whichever you feel is the best for your driving habits.
