Re: auto or manual trans??

Guess it all depends on what you want to do with your car. The a/t is okay if you're going turbo or doing some serious n/a motor work, but you'll have to get a higher stall and stuff like that. The a/t is more consistent with shifts and the initial shock on the driveline at the start of a race is greatly reduced when compared to dumping the clutch on a manual. A good example of an a/t car would be SCC's CRX they're working on. Or some of those high powered domestics. Anyway a manual is much more fun as you have control over what gear you want to be in and if you're really good at shifting you can keep up with an a/t. Besides for street cars on the whole, the manual would probably be better anyway as it has more gears to accelerate with and has the o/d unlike the 3spd a/t in a ZXT. For a streetable car a manual would be the ticket in my opinion. I can't wait to switch my a/t either and improve the gas mileage. Oh and Ecology has a bunch of m/t for a Z there so you won't have any problems finding one. The a/t is a little more rare.

Re: auto or manual trans??

Who cares if a Buick V8 or V6 turbo can beat a stock 280ZX? A buick is a butt ugly car! You might as well be driving a garbage truck with a 8.0L V10

Gearing makes a huge difference in acceleration. If that same Buick had a 5-speed, it would waste another Buick with an automatic assuming both have the same engine.

Ya, a 2001 Corvette with an auto can beat most Zs with a manual. That's not the point.
