My friend's 72 240Z has carpet up to the door sills. Was this original or was the vinyl replaced at some point?

which part of the sill are you talking about? The horizontal bit on the outside of the car which the door covers when closed has an aluminium plate over it. The vertical bit inside has carpet. Hope this was of some help.
