There were no '79 280z's any where they were only built up to '78
All zeds manufactured in japan are Fairladys,
The only difference between the fairladys and normal z's are the badges and mirrors. J-Spec cars had the mirrors on the front guards about halfway down the bonnet.
Jap spec L-Series are no different to the rest of the world, polution gear probably differed a bit from america though.
90% sure japan didnt have an L28ET option either... they had L20ET's in skylines over there though.

I discussed this with a few people on AIM that are members on this board (icice9) From what we could gather its a rare pre production 280z Fairlady and has been a Japanese Import car.
Built the same year as the ZX but is badged the Z
It even says Z above the transmission below the stereo.
"Fairlady 280z"
Other things to indicate its a import car are the speedo as it goes red at 100kph and is limited too 180km/h as Australian versions (ZX's) dont go red at all and go all the way too 200km/h
It is a L28 EFI Engine same as a ZX.
