what trans should i get? might need new one already
thats right, i think i have started teh deterioration of my trans today. the car is still running great so we took teh dizzy apart sprayed it with electrical cleaner blew it out and then drilled out the one bolt so we coul hold teh cap down with two bolts, i think i fixed the proble,. but i went and got gas today then went to work and on my way back i squeled all of first gear leaving work shifted hard into second with a nice loud popping noise, didnt think anything of it till it was a little tougher than normal to shift into third, then i was concerned, but still didnt know for sure yet. then when i was engine braking to a stop sign is when i hear the grinding noise and after i pulled into my drive way heard a clunking noise like a thrown piston sept from the tranny, i was hoping its the pressure plate/clutch/through out bearing, but it stops when you hold the clutch down and it sounds like its from mid tranny and not teh front
soooo if i have to get a new trans, what should i go with because its going to be impossibleish to find a BW for this car up here, sooooo alternatives people!!! and strong ones ata that!!!!
i know 260zturbo said he has a 240sx tranny, wondering how well that bolts up? what he did, and i know you can get Z32 trannies up there with a modified bell housing/adaptor plate and then custom driveshaft.

a z32 tranny is going to cost u a good penny. u still have to send the bellhousing to get machined with a adapter and then u have to get a custom ds. a 240sx tranny is the same as a 300zx n/a tranny. its very straight forward. take the bellhousing off a 5 speed. u have to bore out the 3 pilot holes to fit the sx rods. then u have to swap the front bearing from a z tranny to the sx tranny. put new gaskets and seal her up. u can use the z transmission cross member but u have to get a gm urthane bushing that holds the tranny and crossmember together. then u need to get your ds shorten. its work but worth. or go find a zx tranny. both of these use a 240mm clutch and flywheel. you should really brake apart your tranny. their is a rear nut on the tranny that comes loose.

sounds like your bearings said good-bye. i tried to rebuild my stock tranny from my 77 280z about 5 years ago and i am not going to lie to you...it sucked! i put all new bearings and syncro's in and when i put it back in (3 different times after tearing into it 3 times) something was wrong every time. it was like the tranny didn't like the new parts. ????????? i even had my trusted mechanic try to rebuild it and he had the same problems. pretty stupid. so i did some research and found that 240sx tranny's bolt right in, so i went to my local junk yard and found one with only 45,000 miles, replaced what i had to and wa-la! it bolted right in basically. now, for some reason, i don't remember what i had to do for the drive shaft, but i think (THINK) I used the 240sx drive shaft with no modification. i really don't remember though. anyways, since then, no problems what-so-ever. personally i think the 240sx tranny is stronger than the stock 280z i had plus i got 5th gear now (early 77 280z came with 4 speed). good luck buddy

http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/2...all/index.html im kinda curious if u used the sx driveshaft. bc that thing has so many ujoints in it. my driveshaft was made with beefier ujoints. the sx had a huge rubber balancer on it and what not if i remember. they have a short noze diff i believe so i think that might be a different flange on it. dont quote me on this but i could be very wrong.

sounds very straight forward and fairly simple except machining the bell housing/front half, which i saw you can send to troy soemthing and he will do all the crap and send a bearing back for like 100 bucks plus shipping, then swap and bolt up, and shorten the Z driveshaft? or shorten the sx driveshaft? and then also thats crazy that teh clutches and what not are the same so i will have an even better selection of clutch and pressure plate option since its an sx!!!

yeah, like i said, i really don't remember what i did for the DS but all i remember is that the 240sx tranny was alittle longer becuz of the 5th gear that i didn't have before. i also used the 280z bearing because it was easier. i also think i used a 94 or 95 tranny which was alittle different than the ones everyone else were using for their Z. sorry i am not remembering everything. i know one of my buddies cut his 280z drive shaft to fit and it worked very well, just be sure whoever cuts into a DS knows how to fabricate it back to make it strong again.

well for sure. lol. i wouldnt imagine the 89-86 tranny really being any much different. well, i got a project, one day i should just drop the trans and see if anything looks stupid with the clutch/flywheel assaembly. but i still want to do this swap. but i gotta try to find a tranny for as close to free as possible. lol

the only problem that i have with my 240sx tranny is the stupid speedometer sprocket. in the last 5 years i have eaten 3 of them! they are made from a plastic so it doesn't cause any real harm to the tranny, but still, i have no idea and another guy i know has had the same problem. anyways, the 240sx tranny swap is the easiest with the least amount of fabrications, but basically your options are very broad with some imagination and fabrications. 350 turbo tranny's bolt on with a plate added between the engine and tranny, skyline tranny's work also (same as 240sx but MUCH expensivo!). the cheapest route would to just grab one online or junk yard, replace what needs some love on the used tranny and then slap it in yourself because a garage will charge you $350-$450 just to drop and reinstall the tranny and then plus labor and parts. cha-ching!!!!!!

haha, im fully competent enought to swap it myself, im just not failiare with teh insides of trannies though it seems farily simple, soo id want advice/assitance when i got to change that bearing adn also i cant do machine work for obvious reasons, the lack of the machining equipment, so id have to send it out. everything else is wambam thankyou me! lol.

well, here's a video i made so you guys can all hear/see it. and yeah, trans is caput, dont know what part but its definatly IN the tranny itself

unless some how rods stop knocking when you push the clutch pedal in then yes im sure its more grinding than knocking specially when you engine brake it. the engine is perfect and sound i have no doubt in my mind the engine is in perfect condition, sept i need to re-adjust the first 3 or 4 ligters to get rid of the one thats still ticking.

i swapped trannies already, started at 4 finished at 6:40. lol. noise is all gone. and there WERE alot of metal shavings on the plug. curious, where did you get your machining done to get teh 240sx tranny swap done? or did you buy the tranny done already? cause im really want to do this. and by the way, the 4speed blows. lol, i feel so primitive, and they are a little tougher to shift. sighhh......
