I have a 76 280z that was running real good, then I turned left gassed it and now all of a sudden I have a 4 cyl z. 8 is cool but 4? I have checked plug wires,dist. cap,rotor, and the plugs too. #'s 5 & 6 were black. Not wet oily black but really sooty looking. Cleaned them up regapped them put them back. Started the car for approx 10 sec. removed the plugs again and they were as if I had never cleaned them. What in the %$# could have happened when I turned? Ya'll ain't my wife so I hope that you believe me when I say I wasn't screwing around, just putting around listening to a cd. Can anyone help me out here?
I also have a 79 280zx with a supposedly rebuilt engine for parts, bought car for a V-8 conv. but my pretty toy comes first.

well, when you said the plugs were sooty, this means that they are carbon fouled. Basically, it could range from your carburetors being out of sync, down to the exhaust not exiting the car well. I've had the same problem before, but I upgraded to bosch platinums, and it reduced the level of carbon. Hope that helps.

 

If my EGR was clogged would that cause 5 & 6 even with new plugs to not fire @ first turnover. Should it run right for a sec?, then foul them out. Still looking for help, about ready to pull head in frustration.

 

My life sux, my car is dead.. Boo Hoo ..Enough of that crap what can I do now... The plug wires have all been tested-replaced, as have the plugs been cleaned and replaced in different cyl. Dist. was tight (Bleachzee) and has been turned both ways even to extreme measures. I checked Vic Brit catalog and the injectors from both 76-79 zs' were the same. After checking the pulse or squirt-gun like stream that came from 5 & 6 seemed much. After replacing the 2 injectors, checked them and really nice mist. Replaced them with clean plugs.. Same - fouled 5 &6 Black. Ran hands down the wires from dist. to plug. Thankfully they were good.
So since it's holiday season, but worse cause everybodys b-day is in the next month and half also. What I'm rying to say is " I have no compression tester." But we got strong thumbs. pulled 5 & 6 placed thumb over 5 and it pops it off pretty strong. Number 6 is very weak, can almost hold thumb down through the whole stroke.
Thankfully I have the other Z for parts, best thing I bought this year. But if anyone needs 79 parts or the whole dang car except for the engine-tranny, I just need enough $ to get a decent not crappy gasket set. Thanks to all that tried to help me on my trek to dissappointment, had hoped that it wouldn't be that bad. Maybe she just needed to be burped , not a spleen transplant. Oh well

Sorry it doesn't have a header.. Stock Z no mods yet.

Most likely it will be the 76, I gotta find a cheap body kit or just the rearend piece before the 76 comes off. But I don't if the 79 will fit, I'll put up a post on zcar.com and see. Get back to ya soon
