Borg Warner T5 tranny

I just got done installing the Borg Warner T5 tranny in my 240Z. I didn't many replies to my inquiries on how to do this, but I blundered through it all on my own. First off, when you put this tranny in, the shifter comes out four or so inches too far forward. This can be fixed if you find a different shift lever (I found one out of a mustang) and put a couple of bends in it. It now comes out just where it is supposed to and shifts great. Next was the driveline problem. I accidentally threw away my driveline for this tranny so I didnt' have the yoke (the splined part that goes into the tranny) After many countless hours of trying to find a cheap used one, I found out that it wouldn't work anyway. The driveline was made with non-replaceable u-joints and I couldn't have put it on my 240 driveline anyway. I went to the driveline shop, bought a new one ($70) and installed it directly onto the 240 driveline. Both trannys are the same length, so it didn't need shortened. My advice, go with the T5 instead of the earlier five speeds. First gear is lower, fifth gear is higher. It shifts better and is way better all the way around. Just thought you guys might like the input on how to do this conversion since no one else seemed to know how (since I didn't get any replies) Have fun!!

It was out of an '83. They are pretty easy trannys to identify. It says Borg Warner right on the side of it.

Why did you have to modify the tranny mount? What do you prefer about the stock nissan slushbox over the BW? Strange!!

Re: Borg Warner T5 tranny

I must be weird but I really like that "notchy" feeling in the BW. I really disliked the Nissan tranny because you couldn't really feel when the shifter was at. The "smoothness" seemed more like sloppyness to me. In the BW you can tell everything that is going on inside and exactly when it goes into gear. You can feel the detents start to push the syncros into place and when the detents slip out of their notch when the syncros have the countershaft gear up to speed and then you can feel when the sliding hub slips over the dog teeth into gear. I must be a freak cause everytime I shift I feel all that going on and it puts a smile on my face. I like to be able to feel what is going on and the BW certainly does that.
