4 barrel conversion for a 280z

does anyone have one for sale? just wondering...

what things do I need to change for the conversion to work?
would the fuel injection fuel pump work with the carb?

has anyone done this before?

NismoPick Dec 28, 2008 05:58 PM

Please search... this topic has been discussed before.

snwbrderphat540 Dec 28, 2008 10:02 PM

discussed ALOT! and you'll actually loose a slight amount of performance on a stock engine doing this so.... a horrible investment imho. and NO you cannot use a EFI fuel pump on a carb setup

Well that's not entirely true. You can use an efi fuel pump. You just need a 3 piece fuel regulator with a return. Mallory makes a nice one. Only about 180 bucks.

low pressure fuel pumps for a carb are super cheap. :D Same goes for the regulators.

bmwe30 Dec 29, 2008 10:31 AM

I tryed searching around the site but to no luck,

why would I lose performance? I have a friend with a 260z with a 600cfm 4 barrel and his was pretty damn fast
his motor was stock

would the 3 2 barrel carbs be a bitch to run with?

I just searched "barrel" for you:

https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...ghlight=barrel

https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...ghlight=barrel

https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...ghlight=barrel

https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...ghlight=barrel

The list goes on and on. After reading those, hopefully you will have understood to stay with fuel injection. The "3 2 barrel" carbs are Tripple Webers and is IMO the only carb swap even worth thinking about. After you factor in the parts & labor costs.... the gains aren't worth actually doing it, unless you are only doing it for the Tripple Weber sound.

snwbrderphat540 Dec 29, 2008 10:51 AM

we had a thread on this a few weeks ago it linked back over to the thread like this on hybridz and dyno results showed a few hp loss. dont ask me to explain it, just the truth. its not worth it to go to carb really ever unless your build a high high comp motor and dont know how/want to deal with a standalone fuel management system, but even then like nismo said i'd go triples.

my bad I was searching for 4 barrel conversion,

I'm going to do the swap myself, I have a friend with the triple weber set up he would give me,
where could I get rebuild kits for the webers, what does the triple weber sound sound like?
I'm gonna start reading those

Or if you can't figure out how to do that, go to this website and it will do it for you! http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/ :102:

I think I saw that one, from what I understand only 2 barrels opened up on the 4 barrel set up,

snwbrderphat540 Dec 30, 2008 08:22 PM

hey fixed that, before he posted the results but it was an initial issue yes. but it was working fine for his final post results

bmwe30 Dec 31, 2008 05:14 PM

I didnt see his last posts....

snwbrderphat540 Jan 1, 2009 03:54 PM

why do you want to do this now? just a good way to blow money? lol

bmwe30 Jan 1, 2009 05:35 PM

well its an easy system to tune and fix,
also the parts for a carb are everywhere, and cheap
and this fuel injection system is aged, no OBD system and isnt all that great

NismoPick Jan 1, 2009 05:49 PM

Ah yeah... I keep forgetting cars started out with fuel injection back in the old days and the new age cars are all carb'd.... :wasted: All the new Corvettes and Porches use carbs! How silly of me....

bmwe30 Jan 1, 2009 06:00 PM

well as you know all fuel injection systems are NOT made the same, with this system you have to hunt and peck to find a problem, no codes to read.... no check engine light or anything but gauges, (which didnt do a thing for me in this situation) BTW I love that this car came standard with every gauge you need
if this system was at least in the late 80's I could figure out whats wrong with a scan tool,

Carbs on the other hand are much simpler, and motorsports around the country still use carbs,
one of the highest average speed racing Nascar
the most horse power prodused by anything on the road NHRA
both use carb's

and if I'm not mistaken 280z's around the world other then the US had carbs and didnt change untill later

dont get me wrong I really like the fuel injection now and days, they make great power with great MPG one thing carbs cant do, it's just this system is trash

NismoPick Jan 1, 2009 06:05 PM

Well aparently your mind is made. All I can say is that I love the 280z / 280zx fuel injection system. It is basically the most simple fuel injection system there is. OBD-II is great if the computer actually senses a prob... but if you understand how a fuel injection system works, it's easy to diagnose probs on any system. Instead of going backwards on technology, how about learning the fuel injection system? :D

bmwe30 Jan 1, 2009 06:09 PM

well when you cant find a good wiring diagram anywhere it's kinda hard, and not to mention I cant find the sensor I need anywhere it's kind of a pain

and I'm use to BMW's GT1 set up (top notch)
ya my mind is made up with the carb's it's just how many cylinders under that carb that I'm wondering about

snwbrderphat540 Jan 1, 2009 06:20 PM

atlanticz.ca will have the diagram and its the easiest system because its so simple only 2 problems are the finicky AFM setup and that its very limited as far as tuning applications and modifications. also you had a BMW e30? its almost the same system

Have you checked out http://www.xenons30.com/ FSM's?

As for the sensor, does it look like any of these?

Time to broaden your horizon..... I like my BMW's, but I don't get stuck thinking they are the best....

Ha! I was thinking the same thing. It's L-Jetronic.

bmwe30 Jan 1, 2009 06:44 PM

well I had an M3 (S52) motor in my garage waiting for a matching transmision which is leaps over the e30, I didnt say the 1989 bmw fuel injection system was all that great, I refered to the GT1 system that BMW just got out of used by e46 and up

I like the bimmer's cause I know alot about them, but they are not the best
and the e30 atleast had OBD1,
