Putting Turbo on L26

I have a 1974 260z, carbs runs good. Good compression.

Parts collected so far:
Turbo from 83 in good shape
Turbo Exhaust manifold
Z32 MAF
Stock 83 280zx fuel injectors
Z31 distributor
Z31 computer (have someone the can tune it)
N42 intake

Things needed
Gas tank
misc wiring
Misc sensors...oil,knock,water temp
Fuel rail
Fuel pump
Fuel regulator

What else do I need? Just putting together all the parts I need. I know I could just locate a L28 turbo and swap but up for the challenge.

-Injectors
-Entire EFI harness (including all relays)
-Coil ignition harness
-ECU
-Fuel pump module
-AFM
-Distributor
-Oil pump w/ distributor shaft
-Coil bracket w/ ignitor
-Fuel pump

Optional parts that would facilitate the process:
-Intake manifold
-AAC / EGR actuator pump (only if you want those items to work)
-AFM to turbocharger accordion connector boot
-Thermostat housing w/ all sensors
-CHTS (if current chassis doesn't have one)
-TPS (n/a is 3 prong, turbo is 2 prong)

Those are all the bare essential components. If you were to buy all that individually at a junk yard, it would probably take you 20hrs+ to remove it all (the actual turbo & oil pan being the worst parts), and I imagine you'd be spending $500-$800 unless you find someone cool enough to just give you a flat rate for a wheelbarrow full of parts. I can usually source a complete L28ET (in the USA) for less than $500. I've done many motor swaps, turbo and n/a, and mixes of all... and when I say it's easier and cheaper to source a complete motor, that's because it is, but you now have the list, so I hope that helps.

Lastly, yes, you would need bigger cc injectors, and an ecu to control them... neither of which are cheap. Also, a thinner hg will up the CR a lil bit... probably not enough to make a head gasket job worth the tear down.

EDIT... you have a mix & match of Z31 / Z32 parts... I suggest getting the motor running on stock turbo components, then upgrade. Otherwise you will be trouble shooting for years trying to figure out what upgraded parts are malfunctioning.

Good advice, Yeah I was trying to source all stock parts, not as easy as I would have thought.

I do have a stock AFM, can get my hands on a Jtube intake manifold.

nismo, you seem to have all the answers. So, I also have a Z32 turbo ecu, am I thinking right that if I want to use that then I would have to switch to a crank trigger ignition or can I still use the dizzy from the z31?

Forget the j-pipe and just run a front mount.

NismoPick Dec 20, 2012 11:45 AM

^^^ x2.

It would be an electrical engineering nightmare to get the Z32 ecu working correctly on that setup... the Z32 (VG30DE) is a V6 DOHC engine with cam sensors vs the L28ET SOHC with no cam sensors.

The Z32 maf upgrade comes into play with a NisTune'd Z31 ecu. Or a Mustang SVO maf running a JWT ecu.

Again:

Thanks nismo! I am going the stock route, picked up a turbo ecu, harness coil with ignitor. I need a distributor and gas tank and misc sensors. Probably going to put an intercooler on with initial setup and not use the jtube. Buying a new down pipe.

Hopefully I find the rest of the small things locally.

Anyone in the central florida area?

Im going to atempt a draw-thru setup... carbie turbo!

Nismo here is a pic of parts collected. You say that I need all the relay's. What relays do I need for this harness? Also, fuel pump module?

Is that a trick question? All relays means... all relays... :D

Yes, also fuel pump control module.

See attached pic:

So i guess that I am missing that part of the puzzle~!

Tooquick260 May 26, 2013 05:59 PM

I got all this to work. What a struggle, being my first adventure of a motor tear down, tranny removal custom fabrication, 6 speed tranny install and with an LSD rear diff install. Also changed the coilovers all the way around. Upgraded the rear brakes to Z32 rear disc with functional rear emergency brakes.

Stay tuned, will post pics once I get the exhaust installed next week........and a 4 wheel alignment.
