Question 74 260z what to swap?

Hey guys new guy here, I'm picking up a 260z this weekend and the car is going to be my daily I picked a 74 because I don't want to deal with the smog laws and the 260 has been my favorite Z of all time probably. So my budget is around 4K max I would say I would like a little more modern Nissan engine if possible. SR20, RB20... My question is which engines are the easiest to swap I've been searching the forum from what I saw people are saying go V8 I really don't want to do that. Since it's going to be my daily I want it to be economical also if possible not a big V8 and I really would like to keep it in the Nissan family

Thank you

I have right around 4k into my VQ35DE swap, but i fabbed everything and its about 75% of the way done. ( I have all the parts ) You will be hard pressed to do an engine swap for under 4k.

Yes,,, do what nismo says.

I took my 260z and added the 280zx turbo stuff to it. It cost about 3 times as much as to just buy a 280zx turbo motor and install.

Swap and done. I would recommend doing a computer upgrade as well. Maybe a z31 ecu swap while doing the motor install.

Hey. I don't mean to jack the thread, but what is involved with the z31 ecu swap on an l28et? And can it be done on NA l28's too?

My personal belief is that the stock ECCS from any distributor driven VG30E will run the L28ET better than it's stock ECCS. Even a Maxima ECU / MAF - you don't necessarily have to find a Z31 ECU or an Infiniti M30 ECU (what I used...). All the write-ups involve the Z31 ECU though. With the others you'll have to figure out the re-wiring...

As for the NA L28, you'd need a Crank Angle Sensor (L28ET Dizzy and oil pump spindle - or - an external CAS or something) - but otherwise I don't see why not...

I'm all for the L28ET swap as being the cost effective answer to more power, less fuss. (just start with a better engine management system from the get-go - don't fight the stock ECCS if you don't have to...)

I went thru the L6 gambit myself, first triple carb'd L28, then L28et, and now RB26. Wish I'd have just banked the $15g+ and stayed with the L28et...
